ONLINE LYNCHING
You MUST read the libelous lunacy of Debra Dickerson, as she simultaneously flaunts her arrogant ignorance about Mumia Abu-Jamal and his framing while legendarily licking the boots of neocons who seek to execute him. It is revolting, revisionist, rabid drivel. (See her libel posted below.)
The year 2000 is upon us. Millennium madness is increasingly maniacal. Debra’s madness is malicious! I have never ever read such a venomous and personal attack against Mumia! Mumia is my hero. I don my dreadlocks as a proud tribute to him. So, Debra’s attack offends me deeply and personally. What follows is my personal counter-attack in reply...
No one who has done any modicum of research on the facts of Mumia’s case can ever deny that he was framed! Mumia is Amerikkka’s most tragic political prisoner. And, he is its only political prisoner on death row.
Mumia is a breathtakingly beautiful man, physically and spiritually. I am perpetually amazed by the beauty of his regal dreadlocks, the depth of the smooth tone of his chocolate skin, and the sparkle in the whites of his defiant eyes. He has been locked in a cage and malnourished for 18 years. Defiantly, his physical beauty and his spiritual power belie the conditions of his state-sanctioned tortures.
It is impossible to imprison a cause. Though oppressors will never cease trying to do so. Thus, Mumia has continued to be an intellectual, political and racial inspiration to millions globally; all of whom are far more literate and conscious than Debra and her lost ilk.
Mumia was a gifted writer at 15. It is then that he became a central media officer in the Black Panther Party (BPP). He was a celebrated Minister of Information for the BPP. As a successful adult journalist, he was president of the National Association of Black Journalists. In Philadelphia, he became a renowned radio journalist and a vocal champion of MOVE. He was a fierce crusader against police brutality in Pennsylvania, where police are fiercely brutal.
Mumia used his pen and his power in the media to expose the evils of police. His pen is the only REAL reason that he has been penned by fascists in Philly. And, Debra has used her pen to further their genocidal agenda.
Like most neocons, Debra is boldly unconcerned with reality. House niggers never cared about the reality of life for field niggers. They lived only to slander those niggers caught out there in the field. They loved to stand on the backs of those “bad” niggers. “Good niggers” still stand taller that way...House niggers still rule in every arena. From cyber-rags to tell-lie-vision news, puppets like Debra do the bidding of racist puppeteers who strategically censor truths from billions daily.
For those who are not content with their puppet masters like Debra, PLEASE STUDY THE FACTS OF MUMIA’S CASE. They are facts that Debra blatantly evades entirely. Mumia has never had a fair trial. That alone will free him.
Rather than examine those facts, Debra chants neocon mantras about “crime”, “violence”, “haircuts”, and “prison choirs”. All of which have absolutely nothing to do with the framing of a revolutionary rebel activist journalist named Mumia. What crime has Mumia ever committed? When was Mumia ever violent to anyone? What the hell does singing in a choir have to do with censorship or police brutality or penal torture? How will eurocentric hairstyles rectify the travesties of criminal injustices?
Debra is a fool. A libelous, handkerchief-head, lying, lost fool. She sings to a white God. And, she thinks her perm will save her soul.
Mumia and I know better. We know the evil that men (and the bimbos they employ) do. We know how many other BPP members were murdered/framed and incarcerated. We know the similar sagas of fellow rebels like Geronimo Ji-Jaga, Assata Shakur, Angela Davis, Fred Hampton, Huey Newton etc....And, we know the fatal price of “free speech”.
We need MANY others to know what we know. The truth about Hurricane Carter was made famous by a song composed by Bob Dylan. Now, Denzel Washington has taken his truth to millions via Hollywood. Who will stop rapping about gangstas and buttocks long enough to pen a song about Mumia Abu-Jamal? Will Hollywood ever tell us Mumia’s truths?
Hurricane boxed with his fists. Mumia STILL boxes with his pen and voice. And, we revere him. Always.
Debra slanders Mumia as she describes him as “scary”. Yet, she never validly explains the reason for her curious fear. What we fear always reveals more about us than the objects of that fear. Debra’s hatchet job is more violent than any act Mumia ever committed. I fear her rabid ignorance far more than she fears his hair. Debra’s slave mentality is what compels her to refer to Mumia by his slave name, to suggest that he cut his hair in adherence to slave fashion, and to sing the songs of a slave’s God.
Mumia’s spirituality is evident in everything about him. He is superior in every way to the godless religions of fools like Debra. Faith without work is dead. No “prison choir” rehearsals would ever distract Mumia from his divine and revolutionary literary missions. Singing freedom songs has never freed a soul. God blesses those who fight! True warriors sing victory songs, after the battles are won.
Mumia is a supreme warrior. His blessings flow globally. They are evident in the fact that he is still alive after 18 years of legal death threats. And, like Mumia, we are proud rebels who continue to demand that “MUMIA MUST NOT BE MURDERED BY PENNSYLVANIA!!!” And, we will NEVER cease this WAR for his survival.
It is truly a pathetic and ugly country that cheers a eurocentric, murderous brute like O. J. Simpson while they ignore and betray a revolutionary that gave his very life for the people like Mumia!!! Football is still more popular than revolution. And, house niggers like Debra are still quarterbacking for the oppressors....

GENERATIONAL GENOCIDE
Mumia Abu Jamal is one of many political prisoners in the U. S. However, due to years of exposing racist police brutality, as a journalist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he is the ONLY political prisoner on death row. Mumia has been convicted by a ruthlessly racist legal system, in a trial founded upon the false testimony of paid/ petrified police informants.
Philadelphia is one of the most vicious police states in America. It is also one of the most rabidly racist cities in America. Philadelphia is the city where MOVE members and 60 other Black residents were bombed. MOVE’s revolutionary politics and radical lifestyles were deemed as ground for public execution. Philadelphia is also a city where a neocon mammy named Courtney Mann is the head nigger and honorary KKK bitch-in-blackface CEO of the NAAWP.
Of all the uniquely repulsive horrors that define the state of Pennsylvania, there is yet another, newer racist tragedy. On February 18, 1998, Jamal Hart, the 26 year old son of Mumia, was sentenced to 15 years and 6 months, followed by 5 years parole, on a “gun possession” conviction. Police claim they found a gun after Jamal allegedly ran a stop sign. As always, it was his word against local agents of the New World Order. Thus, another warrior from another generation has perished under the power of police. Mumia has written:“[Jamal’s] transfer represents punishment before trial, as his bust itself is punishment for his efforts on behalf of his dad.”
To this day, racists are doing all they can to torture, execute and deny Mumia his freedom. Various sources have recently reported that Mumia is embroiled in a hunger strike, in protest of the removal of ALL of his books and papers from his cell. Yet, even after 17 years in a cage, Mumia remains absolutely beautiful and strong, defiant and regal, determined and undaunted, dreadlocked and undefeated.
Mumia was fearless as a very young boy. He remains so as a man. He will be so eternally. COINTELPRO captured his body. NOTHING will ever capture his spirit, bind his soul, or weaken his powerful legacy.
For more info, read “Live from Death Row” by Mumia Abu Jamal. Also read his second book entitled “Death Blossoms-Reflections From a Prisoner of Conscience”. The following quotes are taken from essays in “Death Blossoms”:
From “Father Hunger”: “Here in this man-made hell, there are countless young men bubbling with bittter hatreds and roiling resentments against their absent fathers. Several have taken to the odd habit of calling me “Papa”, an endearment whose irony escapes them...
I resent being “Papa” to young men I didn’t know, while being denied-by decree of state banishment-the opportunity to be a father to the children of my own flesh and heart. My sons were babies when I was cast into this hell, and no number of letters, cards, or phone calls can ever heal the wounds that they and their sisters have suffered over the long, lonely years of separation...
They are me...I realize that I live amidst a generation of young men drunk not only with general loneliness, but with the particular, gnawing anguish of father-hunger...”
From “Interview with Mumia”: “I’m actually named after my first son. It means “father of Jamal” and my first son is named Jamal.
...How did Americans (or people who call themselves Americans), how did they acquire political power here in this country, if not through a gun? How did they prevail over the forces of the Crown, of Britain, in the so-called Revolutionary War, if not through the power and force of arms? How did they prevail over the native peoples of this country in the so-called Indian Wars, if not through force of arms?...If Americans did not fight with all the tools at their command-including guns-against the British, we’d all be speaking with a British accent and saying “God Save the Queen”.
...How many people can brag-and I use that term with a little humor-about having an FBI file from the time they were fourteen? I have. Phone calls, mail, the whole deal. I’ve been tracked by the FBI since I was a child. Dogged by them for my political beliefs, my political expressions, my political associations...They wrote letters to people in my name, signed them, sent them-these letters were complete lies. Because as a young man I spoke out as part of the Ministry of Information of the Black Panther Party. And, I spoke about black liberation...
As we speak, the state of California has announced a moratorium on all interviews with all prisoners throughout the penal system. There’s a reason for that. It’s to keep people in the dark...”
Please pray for both of these kindred warriors, who share the same regal blood and revolutionary courage...

MOORE DISILLUSION:
ON MICHAEL MOORE'S LIBEL
OF MUMIA ABU JAMALOne simply never expects to experience some things...I never expect to hear the most popular rap music stars rap about anything relevant or intelligent. I never expect "brothers" like O. J. Simpson to ever stop enthusiastically breeding their African faces out of existence. I never expect any eurocentric African person to woo or marry anyone who looks like them. I never expect resisting racism to be easy for any of us as we live in this racist world. And, I never expected Michael Moore to reveal his own racism against revolutionary political prisoner of war Mumia Abu Jamal.
What pains me most is that I regard both of these men as heroes. Michael Moore is a gifted rebel filmmaker and a superior researcher of neocon avarice and lies. He is renowned for telling truths about stupid white men that few men of any color dare to tell. In Amerikkka, we need many more white men to expose and validate similar truths.
Mumia Abu Jamal was a child prodigy as a superb newspaper editor and media director for the Black Panther Party at age 15. Since that same tender age, Mumia has been a primary target of the FBI's genocidal COINTELPRO. Yet, Mumia is still a gifted journalist, columnist, legendary Philadelphia radio celebrity, expert exposer of police brutality, supporter and defender of MOVE, and a former president of the National Association of Black Journalists. Like most COINTELPRO targets (including Assata Shakur, Mututlu Shakur, Huey Newton, George Jackson, Geronimo Pratt, and many others), Mumia has been framed and caged for decades. Thus, I never expected to see Mumia libeled by Michael.
In his new book "Dude, Where's My Country?", Michael penned the following:
"Mumia [the campaigning Pennsylvania journalist who was sentenced for the shooting of a police officer and has been on death row since 1982] probably killed that guy. There, I said it. That does not mean he should be denied a fair trial or that he should be put to death. But because we don't want to see him or anyone executed, the efforts to defend him may have overlooked the fact that he did indeed kill that cop. This takes nothing away from the eloquence of his writings or commentary, or the important place he now holds on the international political stage. But, he probably did kill that guy."
Like all true intellectuals, I am an independent thinker. I have never agreed nor do I ever expect to agree with one hundred percent of everything anyone else thinks or says. I respect all intellectual opinions and our rights to differing ones. But, I insist that all opinions be based upon facts! Opinions that are formulated from facts are the only opinions that I will ever respect.
No one with any modicum of intelligence who has even nominally researched Mumia's case could ever form the opinion that he is guilty!!! The facts of this case glaringly prove that Mumia is completely innocent of this murder. Mumia was sloppily framed for the murder of a young white male police officer. How can an intelligent and superior researcher like Michael be arrogantly ignorant of the following facts in Mumia's case???:
1. The bullets in the officer's corpse did not match Mumia's gun taken from the murder scene. It was a gun Mumia carried only for security, as he moonlit as a taxi driver to supplement his media income.
2. Numerous key witnesses have been confirmed as perjurers. Most of them are police officers.
3. Major evidence has been mysteriously destroyed.
4. Mumia has never received anything remotely resembling a fair trial.
5. Another man has confessed to being the murderer as a hired contract killer for dirty police officers.
Why has a revered author like Michael libeled Mumia? Why has a self-proclaimed liberal like Michael suddenly become a megaphone for neocon racists who seek to murder Mumia? How many of Michael's fans will now betray Mumia as his legal lynching looms? Why has Michael so loudly joined the cheers of neocon bigots who seek the state sanctioned execution of Mumia? Why did Michael grossly exaggerate so many truths about Canadian culture in his otherwise typically excellent film "Bowling for Columbine"? How may Michael feel regarding his similarly blatant lies about Mumia? Does Michael know that he has now set his own hands for Mumia's blood?...These are all questions I never expected to be compelled to pose.
My eternal hero Malcolm X spoke classic wisdom in one of his many eloquently radical and timeless speeches. (I am desperately hunting the actual quote! If you know this specific speech, please email me at: ambwww@yahoo.com) I paraphrase:
Every white person has a line that a black person cannot cross...You may never witness it...Some may eat from the same fork you share...Some may embrace you as you marry their sister or brother...But, if you spend enough time with that white person, you will certainly witness that line...That line will reveal their white supremacy and racism...
Michael has crossed that line with me. When disillusioned with someone who has betrayed them, elder African-American mothers express that one has "torn their drawers" with them. Michael no longer dons proverbial drawers. Neither briefs nor boxers...
As each day passes, Mumia's enemies and their evil strange bedfellows are being fully exposed. Like the true and beautiful soldier that he has always been, Mumia battles on. Mumia is innocent and fully clothed in his layered and indelible revolutionary armor. This is far more than I can say for Michael...

A Matter of the Mosque
[col. writ. 8/22/10] (c) '10 Mumia Abu-Jamal
In Manhattan, the controversy over the placement of a mosque (or Islamic house of worship) just a few mere blocks from what is now known as 'Ground Zero' -- the site of the New York plane strikes on 9/11, rages on.Sides have been assembled, and arguments have been hurled like mental Molotov cocktails on both sides of the fray.
The argument, no matter how resolved, shows us how empty is the Constitution, which has an express provision protecting free religious practice.
What an argument for those who claim fealty to the Constitution! For a right that can't be practiced is no right at all.
One is reminded of how the Constitution 'protected' the rights of Blacks after the Reconstruction Amendments to the Constitution were passed from 1865 to 1870. It looked fine on paper, but over a hundred years later they had no reality in the lives of millions of Blacks, who couldn't vote, couldn't sit on juries, serve in public office, or who lived in segregated housing. The 'rights' existed on paper, but such rights being practiced offended the sensibilities of southern whites.
Sound familiar?
Americans treat the actual document (the Constitution) as Holy Writ, papers protected from the ravages of time and temperature, and held behind sophisticated security systems. As for what is says: not so much.

Sisters, brothers, friends and supporters,
I wish I could sit across the table from each of you right now. We’d share a meal and reflect on changes in this world over these 35 or so years. Yes, I pay attention to things on the outside (as much as possible). I know the world is in turmoil and I ache for the Native people who languish in utter poverty on reservations and in inner cities across America.
As a young man, all I wanted to do was make a positive difference in the People’s lives. I’ll turn 66 years old next week and I still want that. It’s difficult to have an impact in my current circumstances, though. That’s a constant source of frustration for me. On the outside, given the chance to roll up my sleeves once again, I suspect I’d still be somewhat frustrated. All that must be done is more than any one person can accomplish. I’d still like the opportunity to do my part.
Thinking back to those days onPine Ridge, what I remember is the funerals. There were so many funerals... So many families lost loved ones.
There was a powerful force at work on the reservation back then, one with a single purpose—to stamp out the last resistance of the Lakota people.
We (the Oglala traditionals and members of theAmerican Indian Movement) stood up because we were trying to defend our People. It was the right thing to do. We had—have—the right to survive.
The land was being stolen, too… used for mining mostly. No thought was given to the disposal of toxic waste. The rivers were full of poisons. Not much has changed, I hear.
In those days, though, the reservation was torn apart by a tribal dispute and the federal government armed one group against another. The result was a long line of tragedies for the People of Pine Ridge… and for the People who were there that day in June 1975.
I honestly understand the pain and anguish suffered by all concerned and I have been part of that suffering.
I have watched people lie on the witness stand countless times and felt the doors closing on me.
I have heard judges admonish prosecutors for allowing false evidence in and, in some cases, for participating in the falsification itself.
The government hid evidence, too.
Or manufactured it. Literally.
The courts say none of this is even in dispute anymore. So I wonder, if the American standard of justice is still "beyond a reasonable doubt," why am I still here?
Some people have had their convictions overturned because of one constitutional violation. The number of constitutional violations in my case is staggering. Yet, I continue to wait here for the same justice to be applied for me.
I hope that someday someone can put it all on the table and show the enormity of the railroading I have been victimized by.
Last year, as you know, my parole was denied. That was a disappointment, but I am not defeated. My fight for freedom—for my People and myself—is not over. I am a pipe carrier and a Sundancer. AbandoningThe Struggleis not—never will be—a consideration.
I am an Indian man and proud of it. I love my People and culture and spiritual beliefs. My enemies like to suggest otherwise and seek to rob me of all dignity. They won’t succeed.
When I look back over all the years, I remember all the good people who have stood up for me, for a day or a decade. Of course, many have stayed with me all along the way. I think of the hundreds of thousands of people around the world who have signed petitions for me, too... people on the poorest of reservations to the highest of political offices.
As we have learned over these many years, my freedom won’t come quickly or easily. To succeed, the coming battle will have to be hard fought. Please continue to help my Committee and legal team as you have always done. Your support is more important now than ever before. When freedom comes, it will be due in no small part to the actions you take on my behalf.
Again, thank you for remembering me. You can’t know the comfort you bring to an innocent man locked away from the world for so very long.
Doksha,
Leonard Peltier

I see C-Span a national forum
Being wasted with passive decorum
We must be wise, thoughtful and revolutionary bold
I see anotherPolitical Prisoner’s story but wonder why other’s aren’t being told
Oh Sis please remember
When in the spot light mention a MOVE member
Have we not suffered enough through time?
And am I right now begrudged forspeaking my mind?
And what about that dead sister of mine?
I feel so upset when Merles name isn’t mentioned
Does she not deserve a few lines?
I know my tongue is hard to hold onto…
Truth isn’t always kind
Don’t retreat to the narrow part of the mind
This is no slight to a forever brother of mine
It’s just an urgent message to cover all ground.

The State and RepressionBy Mumia Abu-JamalSpeech Delivered to International Anti-Repression Congress, October 8-10, 2010, Hamburg, Germany For those of us active in social movements, I'm often surprised at our surprise when the State acts in a repressive or oppressive fashion. It teaches us that the cloudy dreams of Western liberalism have pierced and permeated consciousness, often against our own stated perceptions or ideological persuasion. We have seemingly forgotten, it seems, the fundamental nature of the state, as held by Marx and Engels over 100 years ago in The Communist Manifesto, where the state is described as but “the executive committee” of the bourgeoisie. As such, there are hardly limits to the repression it will utilize to serve the rulers, especially in the stark absence of an effective counter-force.That force must be—must be—an organized, resistant people, who will fight for another way; a way out of the trap of the state — as presently conceived. As a man born in the West (specifically the U.S.), I am actually quite ignorant of the vast scope and breadth of European history, but some years ago, I read a book covering over 500 years of Europe's revolutionary history. Although perhaps little known today, that history is vibrant, insightful and inspiring. It should inform and inspire us today as we face this new empire of neo-liberalism, the latest expression of capitalism, which is a force which exploits not only external, but internal targets. Thus, societal resources are mobilized to attack foreign subjects (usually in the so-called developing world) while denying social services to the domestic population, like healthcare, education, housing and other such necessities.Indeed, the very notion of “social” is attacked by the rulers, and their corporate media, as the business model is raised and reified as the only reasonable structure upon which society is organized. In truth, for more than half a millennia, figures arose in Europe, and as part of sometimes, huge social movements, to challenge the powers and hierarchies which ruled, because they were too repressive, too exploitative or fundamentally unfair. And while many of these leaders and movements were brutally suppressed, their efforts cast long shadows through time, which we may excavate for the struggles of this hour. These historical resistance figures, many from religious dissenting groups, or small political opposition formations, did not, of course, prevail. Yet, like isles on the face of the ocean, they were tips of social mountains that were unseen, mostly unheard, yet were there nonetheless. From the late 1200s to the early-mid 1300s, arose several figures who rocked their societies with new, radical ideas. Among them, were the German monk, Meister [Johannes] Eckhart, the Florentine protester, Giano della Bella, and the Flemish Jacques van Artevelde.Of these, perhaps best remembered is Eckhart, a Dominican theologian and mystic, who raised the quite radical suggestion that man created God, and not the reverse, for which he was forced to recant. In 1329 Pope John XXII condemned his writings.Of della Bella, he put forth the Ordinances of Justice, based on radical republican ideas. Van Artevelde was a leader of several successful worker revolts in Flemish towns. These figures were followed by people like the Czech priest, Jan Hus, who, influenced by the English theologian John Wycliff, opposed the doctrine of papal infallibility; John Ball of Kent County, England, called “the crazy priest" for his popular outdoor speeches, called for an end to rule of the rich over the poor, who were but "slaves," and, Bohemian Martin Huska was a revolutionary, a free thinker and a 15th-century communist.Of course, the German priest Martin Luther, was a religious revolutionary (at least in his earlier days) who rocked the Church and state by his opposition to indulgences. He was excommunicated, after which he both married and founded his own church, which still exists today. There are over eight million Lutherans in the U.S. today. Some of these rebels fought wars against the powers of their day, Like Bohemian Hussite, Jan Zizka, who fought in some 12 battles against the Holy Roman Empire, and was considered the “Cromwell of the Bohemian Revolution.” Or Prokop Holy (Veliky), a Czech Hussite successor to Zizka, who was part of a Hussite militia called “Warriors of God,” which swept across Europe for a decade. These figures would be succeeded by English revolutionaries like Gerrard Winstanley, John Lilburne, and Abiezer Copp, who were generally more concerned with the crown than the church. Winstanley was considered an early socialist, who opposed royal and landlord ownership of land, which he considered the common property of all mankind. Lilburne, similarly was called a “Leveller," who was whipped in 1638 for distributing anti-clerical literature. Some time thereafter he was a Lieutenant Colonel in Cromwell's New Model Army, the force that usurped, imprisoned and later beheaded an, English King, Charles I, in 1649.Of course, to most of us, this sounds like ancient history, and we've not even rapped about François “Gracchus" Babeuf, the French revolutionary journalist, or Marx, or V. I. Lenin; or Rosa Luxemburg, for that matter.I say all this to say, revolution is in your blood. You are the great grandchildren of revolutionaries who fought across the vast expanse of Europe to try to live in freedom and equality. You may not remember them, it’s true. But when you study them, they can almost come alive again, to enrich and inspire your tomorrows. For a revolutionary tomorrow! I thank you!Ona Move!Death Row/USA [Source: 500 Years of Revolution: European Radicals from Hus to Lenin by Charles H. THE STING OF BETRAYAL
The following was written by Mumia in 1981 to Philly WDAS General Manager Cody Anderson, after he was fired from that radio station allegedly because he no longer fit the "image" of the station.
AN OPEN LETTER TO WDAS GENERAL MANAGER, CODY ANDERSON - Submitted byMumia Abu-Jamal
Several years ago, in late 1978, while working to prepare a newscast on my weekend shift at WDAS news, I turned around to see two men: then-General Manager Bob Klein and you, then-assistant G.M., Cody Anderson, standing in the doorway of the newsroom. I recall clearly that both of you had warm words of praise for me, like ``I just want to say I really like the way you do news!'', and one added, ``You really sound good!''... the words were warm, and welcoming. I smiled, thanked the both of you, and prepared the next hour's newscast.
Several days ago, you, Cody, now General Manager, remarked during a phone conversation with me, ``I respect you, and your work, Mumia, but I believe you have a problem working within the established framework...'' Sound familiar, Cody? Soon thereafter you were quoted by a 'DAS news-staffer as saying, ``He's good, but he doesn't fit the image of the station . . . it's not the image we here at 'DAS want to project.'' Is that a true, honest quotation? IMAGE? ARE WE TALKING ABOUT A RADIO STATION, OR A T.V. STATION? AND WHO'S IMAGE CAN I PROJECT, BUT MY VERY OWN?
In the past 3 years, my hair has grown long, in a form some people call `dreadlocks'. Also in that time, I have worked in `white' radio, producing pieces good enough to garner a 1980 Major Armstrong Award (1st place NEWS) along with other staffers at WUHY's 91 Report. 91 Report whipped KYW for the prize, a coveted one in the broadcast industry. In that time, members of the local Association of Black Journalists elected me President of the group. Although I worked at a so-called `white' radio station, I produced shows dealing with the depth of the African experience in America, repeated prison interviews with members of the MOVE Organization (a group largely ignored by the so-called Black media inPhiladelphiasince their August 8th, 1978 imprisonment), concise, sensitive coverage of their murder trial, many pieces on the housing problems of both Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey, City Council, theRepublic of New Afrika, the Yoruba community in the city, the visit of Rastafarian Bob Marley, Nigerian ex-PresidentNnamdi Azikiwe, and countless others . . . Hugh Masakela, the Pointers, etc. WHAT IS THIS IMAGE NONSENSE?
Because a man's hair grows long, does that hamper his ability to write, report, broadcast, THINK? Why are so-called `dreadlocks' so objectionable, at a so-called `BLACK' Radio station, when it was a non-issue at a white one? Was it objectionable when, for almost 10 years,Georgie Woods wore a conk, a process? Was it objectionable when jocks at 'DAS began to sport the new fad, California Curls, another process? What about a jock who gets a hair transplant, goes under a surgical knife, to `regrow' hair? Any objection to the projection of those images? I didn't think so. When a Black man stops combing his OWN hair, which grows out of his OWN head, in the form of his fathers, and PROJECTS HIS OWN IMAGE, one as African as the African seed that produced him ANOTHER `BLACK' MAN OBJECTS! (YOU KNOW, THAT'S SOME CRAZY SHIT WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, AIN'T IT?)
Long have Blacks in Philadelphia waited for a black-owned, and black-operated radio station ... is THAT IT? IS THIS THE FUTURE THAT BLACKS LONG-AWAITED, DREAMED OF AND PRAYED FOR? BLACKS ARE IN POSITIONS OF SO-CALLED `POWER', BUT IN WHAT CONDITIONS ARE THEIR MINDS, CODY? ARE THEY STILL `WHITER THAN SNOW'? IS THIS THE NEW DAY THAT BLACKS IN THE BROADCASTING BUSINESS LONGED FOR? WHAT A SAD, PITIABLE DAY. WHAT PETTINESS!! WHAT NIGGERISM!!!!
I have been offered several jobs in TV, both here in Philadelphia and across the nation, both paying nearly $35-thousand a year. Was that enough money for me to shave my head, and slip into a 3-piece suit? Not even! And my family continues it's struggle to survive to make ends meet, like most of our people. THERE IS WORK TO BE DONE, CODY, AND AS THIS IS MY HOME, THERE IS WORK TO BE DONE RIGHT HERE AT HOME. IT IS JUST SUCH NONSENSE AS IMAGE THAT KEEPS US SEPARATED AND WEAK ... WHILE WE FIGHT EACH OTHER, WHILE SILLY-ASS POLITICIANS FIGHT EACH OTHER, WHILE MUSLIMS FIGHT BAPTISTS, BUDDHISTS OPPOSE MUSLIMS, DEMOCRATS FIGHT REPUBLICANS, NIGGERS FIGHT NIGGERS, BABIES ARE BEING MURDERED AND BURIED IN SHALLOW GRAVES BY THE SCORE! IS MY IMAGE, MY ESSENCE, CODY? IS THAT SHIT REALLY IMPORTANT AS WE, AFRICANS EVERYWHERE STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL? Is it important to the people who listen to WDAS, at 29th & Dauphin, Germantown & Chelten, or 11th & Kater Sts., whether I comb my hair, or not, or whether I wear a neck-chocker, or not? Aren't they concerned about the world around them NEWS NEWINFORMATION ABOUT OUR LIVES? And who can do it better, Cody? When I worked at 'DAS, I also worked at WUHY which means I worked 7 days a week, 2 days on the weekend for WDAS, and 5 days a week for WUHY. For a measly $100 dollars a week I hustled, worked, time over over-time, newscasts, and anything else ... FOR WHAT? So News Director, Charles Harmon could come up to me, and tell me he needed ``someone more flexible''? HAVE you found it yet? Out of the countless many who have come, and gone thru that newsroom, has someone more FLEXIBLE been found? Has someone more committed, more able, been FOUND? IT WAS WRONG THEN, FORHARMON TO FIRE ME, A BULLSHIT, EMPTY REASON HE KNEW, YOU KNEW, AND I STILL KNOW, IT'S STILL WRONG! But, this time, the wrong will not be borne in silence.
I WILL NOT GRIN, AND BEAR IT, AND WAIT FOR A BETTER OFFER. I WILL NOT PRODUCE WORK MEANT FOR BLACK MINDS AND BLACK EARS, FOR A WHITE RADIO STATION. I WILL STRUGGLE, AND BATTLE, UNTIL THIS ONE WRONG, HAS BEEN RIGHTED. AS FOR MY IMAGE ... LIKE ALL LIFE FORMS, IT WILL CHANGE FOR NOTHING IN LIFE STAYS THE SAME. BUT, I WILL NOT GO UNDER THE BLADE FOR A PAYCHECK FROM YOU! I WILL BE JUDGED, ON MY WORK, MY RECORD AMONG MY PEOPLE, MY COMMITMENT TO THE RIGHTNESS OF THE STRUGGLE OF THE AFRICAN TO FIND DIGNITY WHEREVER HE WALKS, NOT ON THE SMALLNESS OF OTHERS, AND THEIR LACK OF SIGHT. IT IS IRONIC, IS IT NOT, THAT A BLACK MAN SHOULD BLOCK ANOTHER BLACK MAN, FROM PERFORMING WORKS IN THE INTEREST OF BLACK PEOPLE? IT IS A STATEMENT OF OUR TIMES, AND A STATEMENT OF A MENTALITY THAT MUST BE ERASED IF WE ARE EVER TO SURVIVE!

BLACKGROUND INFO:
The frame-up of Mumia for the murder ofDaniel Faulknerwas NOT the first time that this system had attempted to frame him:
From the moment Mumia joined theBlack Panther Partyat the age of 14, he became one of the chief targets of Hoover's notorious "Counter-Intelligence Program" (COINTELPRO). Over 700 pages of FBI files were obtained after almost three years of fighting for them, which illustrate wide-ranging collusion between theFBIand the Philadelphia Police Department--particularly its Civil Disobedience Unit (CDU) and Intelligence Division "red squads"-- extending to at least four other security agencies, including the Naval Investigative Service Office, Military Intelligence, Office of Special Investigation and theSecret Service. The files prove that years before Mumia was framed in the death of a Philadelphia cop, the feds repeatedly tried to set him up on serious felony charges--including murder-- without any basis. This was S.O.P. (standard operating procedure) in the government's COINTELPRO war on black militants. The lies range from the absurd--the photo appended to the files is not of Mumia--to the outlandishly sinister.
When the governor of Bermuda was assassinated in 1973, the feds tried to link the killing to Jamal, who had never been anywhere near Bermuda. They also falsely sought to paint him as an "urban guerrilla" associated with theBlack Liberation Army, marking him to be assassinated by the cops the way BLA leader Zayd Shakur was.
The files repeatedly noted that Mumia was an effective and articulate spokesman and writer for theBlack Panther newspaper, who "made the BPP look good because his approach was very positive." Indeed, not one among the steady stream of reports to FBI headquarters on Jamal's Panther activities, which were compiled at the rate of virtually one a week, indicated that he was ever engaged in anything other than public speaking and writing.
Yet despite the FBI's acknowledgement that Jamal "has not displayed a propensity for violence" and was not once found with a gun throughout this period of intense surveillance, the files regularly labeled him "Armed and Dangerous"--a license for the cops and G-men to shoot first and ask questions later.
"They believe what you write, what you say. And it's got to stop. And one day, and I hope it's in my career, that you're going to have to be held responsible and accountable for what you do." --Frank Rizzo, then Mayor of Philadelphia, a statement which is included as part of Mumia's COINTELPRO files.

The Way of Zinn
[col.writ. 11/13/10] (c) '10 Mumia Abu-Jamal
For the late historian, Howard Zinn, one of his greatest beefs was war, especially imperial wars.
It was therefore fitting that his last book dealt with war, war for empire and capital. His last work, published posthumously, was The Bomb, which attacked the central rationale supporting the U.S. use of nuclear bombs on Japan -- indeed on Japanese civilians.
Zinn, ever the social critic, examined the bombing of Japan in August of 1945 from the perspective of today's discussions about terrorism, to show America's deep hypocrisy:
When private bands of fanatics commit atrocities we call them "terrorists",
which they are, and have no trouble dismissing their reasons. But when
governments do the same, and on a much larger scale, the word "terrorism"
is not used, and we consider it a sign of our democracy that the acts become
a subject to debate. If the word "terrorism" has a useful meaning (and I think
it does, because it marks off an act as intolerable, since it involves the indiscriminate
use of violence against human beings for some political purpose), then it applies
exactly to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki {p.27}.
For Zinn, all war was a violation of the most fundamental of human rights -- the right to life, dignity and social progresses.
Zinn, if he were alive today, would be equally critical of the continuing carnage in Iraq andAfghanistan, made possible in part, then as now, by the acquiescence of what he derisively called "totalitarian liberals."
As an historian, he knew well that wars began with lies, and ended in disaster, destruction and loss.

When Murder Ain't Murder
[col. writ. 11/6/10] (c) '10 Mumia Abu-Jamal
With the sentencing of former BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) cop, Johannes Mehserle, for the killing of Oscar Grant, the system announces its evaluation of the worth of a Black young man from Oakland, California.
Mehserle was sentenced to 2 years; and with time offs, and good behavior, he may do only 7 months; for killing a man.
Seven months -- excuse me -- for killing a Black man.
After all is said and done, Mehserle may end up doing less time that rapper Lil' Wayne did for only possessing a gun -- rather than using one.
And therein lies the tale of the American prison industrial complex.
Can you imagine any set of facts, any convergence of chance,
personalities or fate, that could have had Grant as the shooter, and Mehserle as the shot, and Grant sentenced to essentially, 7 months in jail?
Neither can I.
And that, I think. says it all.

SWING + COUNTER-SWING
[col. writ. 11/06/10] (c) '10 Mumia Abu-Jamal
The mid term elections of 2010 taught many people many things.
For example, that in politics, no victory is permanent; and that waves can be met by counter-waves.
We should also learn that courts are intensely political institutions, for without the Supreme Court decision, Citizens United, the vast wave of money sloshing through elections, that bought oceans of ads, and won quite a few elections, wouldn't have been possible.
But there are other lessons.
When the Obama administration came into power, it demobilized a virtual citizens army of supporters.
It passed the master list of e-mail addresses over to the Democratic Party honchos, and went on with business as usual. It embraced an ethos of bipartisanship with the GOP, and lashed out at its left-wing.
Meanwhile, while Obama's vast election supporters were demobilized, the right, energized by Citizens United, mobilized. Using the airwaves to stoke fear, they swelled and swarmed, and on election night, they burst the banks.
Older and whiter than those who voted in the general election, these mid term voters essentially wanted to overturn the results of 2008. And while they may not have succeeded in that goal, they have thrown down the gauntlet at the Obama administration, and they've let them know that they're in a real battle.
The right, fueled by the so called "tea party", have re taken the House and cut the Democratic seats in the Senate by 1/2 dozen.
If Obama's 2008 election constituted a wave, then 2010 was an undertow, designed to make his next two years into a legislative hell.
In physics, for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction. In politics, for every move there can be a counter move.
The 2006 mid terms, which gave the Democrats majorities in both houses were mad possible by two major factors: 1) former President Bush's deep unpopularity: and 2) former VT Gov. Howard Dean's and former congressman Rahm Emanuel's 50 state strategy, where Democrats vied for seats in largely conservative districts.
Thus, while Democrats had majorities, they were fickle seats, where 'blue dogs' tried to mimic Republicans in their conservatism. Almost half of these blue dogs lost their seats on Tuesday to Republicans, changing the face of the House.
So, Obama begins the second half of his first term on defense, because the electorate swung again, this time against him.

Greetings, my relatives.
It seems another year has gone by since the last time we gathered like
this. I say we, although I am not there with you in body, my spirit
certainly is. We have coined this day, a day of mourning, as opposed
to a day of thanksgiving. It's a shame that for the most part
thanksgiving is relegated to only one day. And mourning is something
that relates to unhappy circumstances that have taken place. We
certainly can't change what has happened. This very day is ours and
tomorrow hasn't happened yet and, is uncertain. I really don't like
to dwell on the mourning aspects of life but instead, on what we can
do to prevent those unhappy and sometimes terrible times in our
history. I may have mentioned it once before but I once read about a
union organizer named Joe Hill that was framed by the copper mine
owners to be executed. And I believe he said what really needs to be
said upon his death. His words were "don't mourn, organize". And
those are also my sentiments.
There are a lot of things that happened in the past that can be
prevented in the future. There are losses that can be regained. But
we must organize to do it. We must find it within ourselves to be in
touch with the Creator for I can tell you from a heartfelt fact that
when they've pushed you away, into a dark corner, not just your body,
but your mind, your soul, your spirit, there is no one that can
sustain you but the Creator himself. Dark moments come and go in all
our lifetimes. And there are those in political office, who will try
to turn your head away from the obvious truths. They will lie to you
about what they believe. They will try to get you to follow what they
consider politically correct while ignoring the truth, such as
protests against the Mosque being built within blocks of the fallen
Trade towers, which incidentally was a monument to wealth and wealth
seekers. I am not trying to demean the innocent people whose only
cause of their death was seeking a place of employment to feed their
families. While they protest the Mosque, no one mentions the Native
American sacred places that by treaty are seriously violated daily.
Our Sacred Black Hills of South Dakota, sacred to many tribes, have
the faces of many of our oppressors carved on them. The place of
vision seeking, Bear Butte in South Dakota, sacred to us for
millennia, has a bar built at the foot of it and there is talk of
having helicopter flights around it to attract tourism. And, there is
even talk of drilling for oil and gas.
Every time I have to write or I should say dictate, one of these
statements, I try to think of what I would say if this was the last
time I got to speak. The thing that comes to mind in some of our
sacred ceremonies and that is thoughts of our relationships with the
ones we love and the Creator of all life. Not to take away from the
theme of this day, but if you can hold the person you love, be
thankful. If you can walk on green grass, touch a tree, be thankful.
If you can breathe air that didn't come through a ventilation system,
or a window with bars, be thankful. If you can stand in an open field
or some other place at night and look up at the heavens, be thankful.
No one appreciates the simple things as much as a man or woman locked
away. I know sometimes some of my friends may have thought I had
become institutionalized and there may be some element of my thinking
behavior that has become calloused from this continued imprisonment.
But I have not for a moment forgotten the needs of my people and the
atrocities committed against them or the circumstances that all the
poor and impoverished face in this world at the hands of those who
take more than they need and exploit for gain, the futures of our
children. I paint pictures of them sometimes, people I've known,
people I've met, places I've seen, and places I've only seen in my
minds eye. And if my paintbrush was magical, rest assured I would
paint for myself one open door.
I wrestle with what to say to you and words are sometimes so
inadequate. So if you are free today, un-imprisoned, be thankful.
Give the person next to you a hug for me. May the Great Spirit bless
you always in all ways with the things you need. May you find joy in
doing what is right and righting what is wrong and seek to be the best
example of what a human should be in our lifetime.
In the Spirit of those we mourn, those who gave their lives and those
whose lives were taken from them.
I really don't know what else to say because in writing this, my heart
has become heavy with the emotions of this time.
In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, who gave his life for what was right and
tried to right what was wrong.

Leonard Peltier

From: Chairman Fred Hampton, Jr.
-------
Targeted
Man, I was born under investigation. And gone most likely die unda' surveillance. In fact my birth was almost permantly delayed. By the infamous Chicago Police Departmentsand Federal Governments December 4th,1969 raid. Now,I ain't cryin' the blues, but I do recognize these shoes. And before I became a Man, I came to understand. That I came into the world with one foot in the grave. Baptized in blood! And came up in the mud. Politically speaking...Figuratively as well as literally. I was a real son of gun. In one way or another I've been locked and loaded. Held Behind Enemy Lines, left to die, and had to live a lil' life on the lamb. And for those who don't understand that, that means living life on the run. I done seen opportunist benefit off of what my previous lineage did. I done engaged in battle with the same Yankees with the same last names that were responsible for taking my Daddy out of da' game. They say that one day they gone kill me. Sometimes in my mind I feel like I'm riding off fumes, so therefore it's futile to try to instill fear into me. For, I done kissed the casket, tangoed with torture, and danced with death. After seeing so many second winds and being pushed past the point of no return you finally come to the conclusion that your Pride,Principles, and Politics is all you got left. Shiiit, if I die today, I done lived. And when I'm gone, put on my tombstone. That The Cub gone home and that the beat goes on. And that I leave an undying love for the people. And as to our enemies that have denied us liberty. We commit to continue to resist and never forgive nor never forget.

Revolutions to Come
[col. writ. 2/26/11] (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
As fires of rebellion and resistance flash through ancient Arab cities, the nations' pundits (especially those of the rightish variety) warn us of impending doom, in the form of rising gas prices, and the bugaboo of near-hysterical proportions -- Islamists.
But there's a funny thing about rebellions and revolutions. They may begin one way, but no one - No One - knows where they will end. That's the nature of revolutions!
The voices of America's pundit class have apparently forgotten that the Founders that they like to revere and praise as Prophets of Freedom, were -- well, revolutionaries, who stood against the most powerful empire of the age -- the British (with a little help and money from the French)
The very notion of having a nation without a king was, well -- a revolutionary idea. That's why, when France had its revolution a few years later, the crowned heads of Europe got together (conspired, really) to beat them into the ground. For, back in those days, the conventional wisdom was that kings and queens ruled by the will of God; hence, the divine right of kings.
The American, French, and Haitian Revolutions put a real dent into such notions.
Abe Lincoln, speaking as a Congressman in 1848, told his fellow members: "It is a quality of revolutions not to go by old lines and old laws; but to break up both, and make new ones."
The forces roiling today in several North African and Persian Gulf countries have been held in check for generations by powerful, repressive and ruthless governments, many of whom have been staunch U.S. allies. The forces which have been unleashed in recent weeks threatens to upend many, if not most of the old relationships and understandings that formed the basis of
U.S. Mid-East policy.
Remarkably, none of the 'experts' on the region, few of the scholars, and virtually none of the talking heads on TV and cable had a clue, until the dam broke and the boiling rage burst forth.
We have no idea when our where these forces will dissipate. They may radiate for years. They may, indeed, spill out into other areas of the world.
That too, is the nature of revolution.

Cracks in the Empire
[col. writ. 2/20/11] (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
Despite what talking heads in corporate media proclaim, there hasn't been a revolution in the North African countries of Tunisia or Egypt, or the Persian Gulf's Bahrain. These have been rebellions.
For revolutions transform whole societies - they just don't remove a few leaders.
That's why much of U.S. reporting is so misleading. They want to call it a Revolution, applaud it, and freeze it, while their handpicked leaders or purchased armies seize the reins of power.
That said, isn't it curious that most of the countries where rebellions are most widespread are headed by presidents or princes who are U.S. allies? And these allies have used their armies and police to suppress their people, who oppose deeply unpopular policies of their rulers?
These rebellions pose serious challenges to the U.S. empire, for they threaten to dismantle the repressive regimes that undergird U.S. Middle East policy. They are still building, still emerging, across the entire region, and espousing a democracy that the U.S. neither wants nor truly supports.
Remember the indecision with which it initially faced Egyptian unrest? 'Nonviolence on both sides?'
When one side has tanks, guns helicopter gunships and fighter jets, and the other side has -- well, sticks -- what can that mean? The U.S. wants quiet. Period.
For, if the choice is between democracy and stability, it'll opt for stability every time, for globalization requires stability, and globalization is the instrument of empire.
Indeed, it is but another word for colonialism -- the control of other states by a central, imperial state.
But this empire is also a debtor nation, which manufactures little, and has to beg abroad to pay its vast armies, and support its global apparatus.
As colonies peel away, or are taken back by their people, the empire decays, first by inches, then by fee, and soon --by miles.
We may be witnessing the end of something huge.

Two Panthers Die
[col. writ. 3/17/11] (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
In a matter of months, two former high-ranking and prominent members of the Black Panther Party returned to their ancestors, largely unknown and barely reported.
During the 1960's and '70's, they were well-known targets of government surveillance as well as efforts to imprison and destroy them.
In Oct. 2010, Michael "Ceteway" Tabor, once head of the New York Ministry of Information of the Party, and also one of the heralded N.Y. Panther 21, died in Luseka, Zambia (S.Africa) at the age of 64.
In February of this year, Don "D.C." Cox, former national Field Marshal and member of the Party Central Committee died in his home in the South of France. DC was 74.
"D.C.", as field marshal, headed military affairs and trained men and women in self-defense tactics.
"Cetewayo", as one of the N.Y. 21, faced imprisonment for a police frame-up designed to destroy the N.Y.Chapter. Rather than trust his freedom to the courts, he skipped bail and left the U.S. D.C. faced charges in Baltimore, MD in connection with military action there, and split the country for the International Sections of the BPP in Algiers. He stayed and worked there for several years before migrating to France.
Both men spent the balance of their lives in places far from the land of their birth.
DC was born in Missouri in 1936.
Cetewayo was born in New York in 1946.
Both men wrote articles in the national newspaper; DC on military matters; Cetewayo wrote an article that was so popular that it was later reproduced and distributed nationally, entitled "Capitalism & Dope = Genocide." It was made into a pamphlet and distributed internatonally.
Cetewayo had a deep, actor's voice, and was a powerful public speaker. Indeed, he introduced Huey P. Newton, Minister of Defense, when he spoke at the RevolutionaryPeoples Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, PA, in summer, 1970.
DC was a soft-spoken, and basically shy man, who rarely spoke to big groups. He was patient, down-to-earth and deeply cared about rank and file members.
Both men wrote books about their lives in the Party, but neither of their works have yet been published.
They believed in Black Revolution, the right of armed self-defense, and the establishment of a Black Revolutionary political party to help usher in Black national independence and freedom.
They fought as warriors for those beliefs, and never stopped believing.
They died on different continents, but their hearts remained in Black America.

So it wd be this way
That they wd get a negro
To bomb his own home
To join with the actual colonial
Powers,Britain,France, add Poison Hillary
With Israeli and Saudi to make certain
That revolution in Africa must have a stopper
So call in the white people who long tasted our blood
They would be the copper, overthrowLibya
With some bullshit humanitarian scam
With the negro yapping to make it seem right (far right)
But that’s how Africa got enslaved by the white
A negro selling his own folk, delivering us to slavery
In the middle of the night. When will you learn poet
And remember it so you know it
Imperialismcan look like anything
Can be quiet and intelligent and even have
A pretty wife. But in the end, it is insatiable
And if it needs to, it will take your life.

American Corrections
[col. writ. 5/18/11 (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
At the western Pennsylvania state prison in Woods Run, Pittsburgh, prisoners and guards alike made the phenomenon of imprisonment more hellish than usual.
That's because, according to at least one broadcast report, men at the medium to minimum securitylock-up, particularly those convicted of sexual assaults against children, were raped, by other prisoners - and by several guards - with ranking staff turning a blind eye.
While the radio report was unconfirmed, the PA Dept. of Corrections (DOC) did the unprecedented. They fired the prison's warden, two deputy superintendents, and even the major there-something virtually unheard of in this business.
Eight prison guards have been suspended without pay earlier this year (although seven of them have not been publicly identified.)
An Allegheny County grand jury is presently investigating the sexual assault charges. No state government official has commented publicly on the claims, but certainly the firing of the prison's highest ranking staff suggests that 'something is rotten in Denmark.'
What makes these incidents particularly poignant is the state prison in Pittsburgh, which was closed back in 2005 because of security and budgetary concerns, isn't the maximum security prison it once was. It reopened in 2007 as a treatment center, a kind of medical unit for men suffering from addictions, age related physical ailments, or serious psychological issues. That's why it was re-classified as a medium-minimum security facility.
That these men, who were promised medical treatment, were treated so basely by other prisoners - and reportedly by guards as well- gives us some sense of precisely how poisonous American 'corrections' has become.
Is there any wonder that American soldiers, many who worked as prison guards stateside, behaved so badly in Iraq and abroad?

GIL SCOTT-HERON, Radical Poet (1949 - 2011)
[col. writ. 5/29/11
] (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
At half past 50, one should hardly be surprised at death - especially natural ones.
But we are often betrayed by feelings such as those, as exampled by the recent passing of Gil Scott-Heron, a pioneering poet of the 1970s and '80's, who, with his remarkable baritone, made the smooth transition from protest poet to singer, succeeding brilliantly at both.
As poet, his phrasings were often backed by the percussive power of drums. His later works were supported by a full band of talented musicians, notably the pianist, Brian Jackson - leader of the aptly named Midnight Band.
During this period we also saw the emergence of the somewhat similar Last Poets, a group, usually numbering no more than 4, who also used rich musical accompaniment to support their poetry.
Scott-Heron's poems and songs were often scathing political critiques, which were powerful cultural commentaries, especially during the Watergate-era, around the time of President Nixon's resignation.
Gil Scott-Heron's work, like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", and "Living in the Bottle", neatly threaded the needle between the political and the personal, and enjoyed considerable airplay on Black and college radio.
Like many artists (especially of the Jazz era) Scott-Heron reportedly utilized controlled substances to feed his need. His influence (as well as those of the Last Poets) had a powerful impact on the Rap genre that would succeed him.
Gil Scott-Heron was 62.

GERONIMO [ nee Elmer G. Pratt] Returns to His Ancestors
[col. writ. 6/4/11] (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
On Thursday, June 2, 2011, came word that former Black Panther leader, Geronimo Ji-Jaga [nee Elmer G. Pratt) died in exile in Tanzania.
Geronimo's life was one of intense and almost total warfare, from battles in his youth on behalf of the U.S. empire in the steaming jungles of Vietnam, to his membership and leadership of the L.A. chapter of the Black Panther Party, where he fought for his people.
The FBI-inspired killing of L.A. Black Panther leader Alprentice "Bunchy" Carter led to Geronimo's rise as the chapter's deputy Minister of Defense, and during a police raid on the Central Avenue office on December 8th, 1969, Geronimo so prepared the site that it withstood over 6 hours of a police paramilitary assault with automatic weapons and grenades.
Geronimo's prominence and shine in the shadows of Hollywood so disturbed the state, local and federal governments that they framed him for a murder that it was impossible for him to commit, and sent him to prison for 27 years.
When he was freed, it was because of an insistent, national movement, and because federal government files revealed he was nearly 300 miles away when the murder took place, and the state's chief witness was not only an LAPD undercover agent, but a snitch for the L.A. DA's office as well as the L.A. Sheriff's Department, an agency that formerly employed him.
Upon his liberation, Geronimo, after going across the country to thank his supporters, left the land of his birth and joined a small expatriate community near Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Like several other ex-Panthers, he could never trust his life nor his freedom to the American government.
And though he spent the balance of his years under a brilliant African sun, one suspects he longed for the rhythms of his native Louisiana, which remained in his speech and its accents.
It was in Louisiana, after all, where he learned about Black armed self-defense, for this was fertile ground for the Deacons for Defense, and armed body which resisted and forcefully discouraged Ku Klux Klan violence in the region.
Geronimo Ji-Jaga, a warrior for his people, returns to his ancestors.

Geronimo Jijaga Pratt - by Lynne Stewart
The untimely death of Geronimo Jijaga Pratt has hit me very hard because it reminds me of all the work yet to be done. Not only the liberation of the oppressed to which Geronimo dedicated himself as a young man and again after his release but also the liberation of those locked away in the torture chambers of this Gulag USA.
The loss of Geronimo is so difficult because he was robbed of the opportunity to contribute to the long term struggle for liberation of the Black community in his most productive years. Yes, there was always a mention or a placard "Free Geronimo Pratt !" but his ability to publicly inspire and uplift was jailed at San Quentin. He was there in his 20's and 30's and 40's. The movement suffered...Hoover and his like triumphed. We must now undo this evil.
By torture chambers I mean, of course, the Prison "holes", those places of solitary confinement, where loneliness and total lack of human contact, drive people mad. Even the strong are "modified". Many of those who have been jailed in this way arepolitical prisoners. Many of them have been in 24 hour lockdown for more than 20 years and face the rest of their lives there. I really don't need to name names--they are engraved on my heart and I hope on yours. Just check the Jericho website for a complete rundown. And also, dare I say it, the Project Salam listing of Muslims wrongfully imprisoned. If we are spared and are still in the world and able to act and activate--this is our primary obligation if we think of ourselves as political, to take up this struggle and liberate those behind bars. As Mutulu Shakur wrote to me (and I paraphrase) "The faith of those who gave their all and still wait for the dedicated comrades, the People, to bring them home, is greater than any religious devotion. "
Geronimo's death reminds us of this paramount obligation. The enemy, in the BOP, the Nebraska and New York and Louisiana prisons will never act until those unjust imprisonments becomes more detrimental to them and their system than freeing our brothers and sisters. Action! Action! Change! Change!

In Memory of G. Ji Jaga
Some say they, "can't get no satisfaction", and sing a sad song over trifles.
I too have grieved over trifles,
Yet though I am sad, I have some satisfaction
For I think vindication is precious,
And he was vindicated a decade and a half before he returned to our faith filled ancestors.
I have some satisfaction,
For I witnessed an adamantine integrity,
(yes adamantine means diamond-like, hard, bright, unbreakable),
Set in a sterling character that valued humanity more than diamonds and gold.
Every effort to Free Geronimo was justified and rewarded by his conduct;
Everyone who joined the struggle to Free All Political Prisoners was renewed and refreshed by his commitment to humanity and clean water,
Every where he went he left evidence of compassion and good deeds.
So, although I'm sad, I have some satisfaction,
Geronimo is free! By Sistah ShebaBPP

Troy Davis: Movement Lessons
[col. writ. 9/25/11) 0'11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
The state judicial murder of Troy Davis ofGeorgiashowed both the limits and the successes of the anti-death penalty movement.
It seems silly to speak of successes when an innocent man is poisoned to death by judicial decree, but though they were partial, they were successes nonetheless.
To attain the support of people like former U.S. Pres. Jimmy Carter, Pope Benedict XVI, Arch-bishop Desmond Tutu and former FBI director William Sessions was no small feat. It showed the reach of the movement to procure such prestigious support.
The movement was also fueled by such revelations as shown by the recantations of people like Antoine Williams, who was one of the state's trial witnesses. Williams later stated, "After the officers talked to me, they gave me a statement and told me to sign it. I signed it. I did not read it because I cannot read. I felt pressured to point at him."
Was there police coercion in the Davis case? The DA certainly thought so, as shown by his remark, "Oh , well, they were probably coerced by the defense too, so that balances it out and we should still kill him."
Think about that.
What power of coercion does the defense possess? Handcuffs? Threats? Jail cells? Criminal
charges? Death sentences?
That any prosecutor can say something so dopey is – well, - nuts.
The Troy Davis movement amassed almost a million signatures on petitions. Remarkable
But signatures on paper (or online) aren't people in the streets.
If a million people were on the march, maybe--maybe--he would be alive.
Maybe.
For one of the other limits are those imposed by the law, one designed to lock in and prevent serious judicial review and remedy. Laws signed into the books by none other than the first so- called Black president: William Jefferson Clinton.
TroyDavis's family and supporters brought much to the anti-death penalty movement. I hope they are not too discouraged to continue the struggle.
In so doing, they can insure that Troy Davis will never be forgotten.

Many of you know, after serving over 38 years in prison, former Black Panther member Sundiata Acoli was denied parole for the third time on March 4, 2010. But he was also given a ten year hit by the New Jersey State Parole Board. Last December, an administrative appeal was denied by the NJ Parole Board and a letter affirming the denial of Sundiata's parole was received.
Considering Sundiata's age and his right to freedom, Sundiata’s legal team is focused on pursuing his appellate remedies through the courts, seeking to appeal his repeated denial of parole. His legal team has expanded over the years and currently in the process of raising the 10 thousand dollars needed to file the appeal.
The good news is, the Appellate Court is ready to set a briefing deadline in spite of the State’s improper delays and callous disregard for Sundiata’s rights. Keep in mind, Sundiata will be 74 years old in January.
People who are interested in the parole and release efforts should contact SAFC @thesafc@gmail.com to inquire about ways to assist us with this urgent fundraising need. We believe the film, A Power Sun, is important and should be supported. Monies raised on Sundiata’s behalf should go towards his appeal. We still believe that he can and will receive his freedom with the right support.
The SAFC is a 501c3 organization. All contributions go directly towards Sundiata’s legal fees. Volunteers of SAFC are not paid and do not request or receive any of the contributed funds.
If you would like to write Sundiata please send your letters to:

Checks and money orders should be made out to The Sundiata Acoli Freedom Campaign
To all those who continute to show love and support to Sundiata and all political prisoners, here's my favorite poem I share with you...
Like You
(a poem by Roque Dalton, a Salvadorian poet and guerilla fighter for freedom in the 60s and 70s. He was killed for revolution.)
Like you I
love love, life, the sweet smell
of things, the sky blue
landscape of January days.
And my blood boils up
and I laugh through eyes
that have known the buds of tears
I believe the world is beautiful
and that poetry, like bread, is for everyone.
And that my veins don't end in me
but in the unanimous blood
of those who struggle for life,
love,
little things,
landscape and bread,
the poetry of everyone
Love & Respect.

The Prison
[col. writ. 12/17/11]
(c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
Every prison is the same; and every prison is different.
Every prison has its own mythos, (think Alcatraz, Sing Sing, Attica), its own rhythm. hard, cool, tight, relaxed, severe or super max. And every prison is run by class -as in how courts or administrators have classified a crime according to whose interests are threatened. For example, in every 'hole" in the State, where all Death Rows are sited, men and women with the worst sentences live the least contentious lives. If they can afford it, (really if their family can), they TV, radio and other amenities -if they can afford it. Some work prison jobs for the glorious wage of around $35 to $50 a month (yes, a month) There, every mind is attuned to the ultimate sentence -death - and against such an immensity, amenities seem trivial. Yet Death Row is a class (as in classification) and beyond it lies a chasm of classifications that are as maddening as they are mundane - AC (Administrative Custody), DC (Disciplinary Custody), PC (Protective Custody), and beyond.
All are lock-up statuses, all have their distinct rules of what is or isn't allowed, and all have degrees of repression. Every major U.S. history book has described America as virtually classless, with rigid class distinctions more a British or European thing. How then can a Nation that claimed classlessness give birth to such institutions that are so riddled with class differentiations? Because America was never classless, and not only did it have rigid classes, it had (and has), caste, more rigid than stone. Millions of Blacks live in such a caste, as noted recently in Michelle Alexander's excellent work, The New Jim Crow. The ruling, wealthy class built prisons and courts to protect them and their wealth from the masses. They also built the ideological illusion of classlessness, which is maintained through their media. They brayed about freedom, while erecting the most massive prison complex (the prison-industrial-complex) this earth has ever seen. The built Prison Nation.

COMPETITION ON THE CORNER
By Mumia Abu-Jamal
The 3rd Avenue El in the Bronx was a major thoroughfare in the borough, and as such was a prime site for one trying to sell The Black Panther.
I had recently been assigned to the Bronx office and in an attempt to sell my 50 copies, I chose a stop on the line where the foot traffic would be quite heavy, as people descended from the elevated train ride. At roughly the same time, another young Black man elected to stop at the busy corner with the intention of selling his wares.
His wares were essentially the same as mine—newspapers. There, however, the similarity ended, for it was clear from his product that competition was inevitable.
The young man wore a dark-green iridescent suit and a brightly colored bow tie. His hair was cut close to his scalp in the "hustler" style, with a thin part cut in, his face shaved hairless. He carried with him a multi-colored plastic shopping bag that appeared to be filled with copies of Muhammad Speaks.
As I surveyed his wares, he was surveying mine. We looked at each other and understood that neither would relinquish the corner to the other.
And so, we began selling in earnest.
Shouts of "Help Us Free Huey!" mingled with "Salaam Aliekum, brother!" as we struggled to sell our product.
"Yo, brother! Find out what’s happenin’ that the white power structure ain’t gonna tell ya! Check out The Black Panther—only a quarter!"
"Salaam Aliekum, Sister! Come on back to your own! Read Muhammad Speaks! Twenty-five cents!"
For nearly an hour the sales continued, fed and famished by the flow of passerby debarking from the trains hissing to a stop overhead. After a while, we got into a conversation:
"Brother, you got to get with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, and stop following those devils like Marx and Lenin and ’em."
"Well, bro’—you should get with the Minister of Defense, Huey P. Newton, and the Black Panther Party."
"You should follow a Black man, brother, not some Jews like Marx and Lenin!"
"We revolutionaries, brother, and we study about revolutionaries from around the world. We don’t care what race they is."
"I can see that, brother," glancing at a copy of The Black Panther, pointing to a cover picture of an Asian, full-haired man. "Who is that, brother?"
"That’s Kim Il-Sung, the leader of North Korea, and a revolutionary."
"You see what I’m saying, brother? Here you go talking ‘bout another guy! He ain’t got nothin’ to say to Black people, brother!"
"Well, if that’s so, brother, why he in yo paper Muhammad Speaks?"
"What you talkin’ bout, brother?" he asked, seemingly stunned by the question.
I read and studied his paper quite regularly, for its layout, news, and commentary, but I doubted if he ever read any of ours. This seemed only logical for someone assigned to the East Coast Ministry of Information office, and I remembered reading this week’s issue of Muhammad Speaks.
"Check it out, brother, in yo international news section."
In disbelief, he turned the pages until, sure enough, an article appeared bearing a photo of Kim Il-Sung. He looked at it, and then turned to me, smiling.
"Yes sir, brother. Yessir. Um-humm."
"And what we learned from him was the idea of Juche, a Korean word that means self-reliance!"

ARE THE POLICE TARGETING ELDER PANTHERS?
By Bro. Zayid Muhammad
For those of you who think that COINTELPRO is a thing of the remote past, think again.
We have, upon bullet and bone solid information and belief, we have good reason to believe that it is alive and well!
On Dec. 12, the NY police department, in tow, with federal agents, raided, ransacked and ravaged the home of elder NY Black Panther legend, Cyril Innis, best known to his comrades as ‘Capt. Bullwhip,’ for his tough, no nonsense taskmaster demeanor.
They went to the job of Panther cub, Shaka Shakur, who did some stellar stabilizing the NY chapter for the New Black Panther Party. Young Shaka was working at the historic National Black Theater in Harlem and arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm that was purportedly ‘found’ at Capt. Bullwhip’s apartment, where Shaka had been staying just recently.
None of us are perfect. Not in our personal, nor in our public or political lives. As for any and all issues facing the cub Shakur, this particular piece is at best, ‘out of character’.
What is clear is that Capt Bullwhip, a personal hero, if I must say so, is indeed a survivor of the deadly and sinister COINTELPRO wars aimed at the Party, in general , and at the NY Panther operations in particular.
Just several years ago, Kamau Sadiki, from the Party’s Brooklyn chapter and father of Assata Shakur’s daughter, Kikuyu, found himself hauled off into an Atlanta courtroom and charged with the 1970 killing of an Atlanta police officer! He was put before an edgy Post 9/11 jury, associated with ‘terrorism’ by his prosecutors, convicted and put in prison for life. The judge, one Stephanie Manis, incidently has overseen the railroaded of Imam Jalil Abdullah El-Amin, best known as the legendary H. Rap Brown under similar circumstances!
Before Kamau was ‘jammed’ in Georgia, they first sought to frame here in New York first, and they tried do it something hideous at that!... on sexual assault charges! When those efforts failed, they took him further south, like the plantation did years ago with rebellious slaves who needed to be ‘broken.’
Even more recently, Francisco Torres, just recently survived an effort to have him reprosecuted for the case that landed the NY 3,Herman Bell, Jalil Muntaqim and the late Albert ‘The Avenging Angel‘ Washington, later known as Sheikh Nuh, in prison since the early 70’s. (Sheikh Nuh died in captivity several years ago.)
Instead of looking at the NY3 survivors, Herman and Jalil, as the model prisoners they have been for years, and instead of coming to terms with all the long repressed exculpatory evidence withheld from them, and laying the groundwork to release these men, they came after Francisco. First in New York, and when that failed, they tried to take it Cali (California)!
Only by the grace of the god our ancestors, these backwards repressive efforts were met well-organized and well-mobilized responses from that almighty ‘x’ factor, the people. Thankfully, and we think, consequently, that sinister effort to reprosecute ‘Cisco fell flat on their faces.
Thankfully, again, in this case, it was that ‘x’ factor that was key…the people!
As soon as word got out, and it got rather quickly, thanks to ‘Whip’s comrade Shep Olugbala, those well respected and much appreciated community survival programs that ‘Whip and Shaka have been working with, immediately became transformed into emergency mobilization response networks!
When it came time for young Shaka to be arraigned, dozens of supporters had already surrounded the 44th precinct where he was detained. Not only that, others had the precinct’s phone ringing off the hook! This was an exemplary response. The latter detail is as important as all the others because it is key in insuring that our soldiers who find themselves in captivity are not isolated where they can be then become subject to unspeakable abuse! Study what happened to the incredible Don Pedro Albizu Campos, or what happened to Sekou Odinga. Remember they literally did put Assata ‘under the jail’ in my backwards upsouth New Jersey. To be more to the point, our freedom fighters once captured and isolated have endured unspeakable abuse. Many of the torture methods that the CIA exported to the most dangerous dictatorships in the southern hemisphere, many were first practiced in full guinea pig form on our freedom fighters!
The New Black Panther Party would like to salute all of those who sounded the drum to the aid of Captain ‘Whip and to Shaka. More importantly, we would like to salute all of you who heard the drum sound and answered!
We say ‘Hell no to COINTELPRO’! Hands off Captain Bullwhip and Shaka Shakur!
Free All Political Prisoners! Black Power! All Power To The People!

Nothing Gold Can Stay
by Robert Frost
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

URGENT MESSAGE RE: MUMIA ABU JAMAL
As most of you already know, Mumia was transferred to SCI-Mahanoy in upstate PA. more than a month ago, directly after Phila. prosecutor Seth Williams announced that he wasn’t pursuing the death penalty in Mumia’s case. This meant that Mumia’s sentence went from death to life in prison without parole. Since arriving at SCI-Mahanoy, Mumia has been in the hole, on AC (administrative custody) status, solitary confinement, even though there is no valid reason for him to be in the hole. The conditions are tortuous and much worse than the conditions on death row. These conditions have been condemned by the United Nations as tortuous. Since arriving at Mahanoy, Superintendent John Kerestes and his staff have gone from one thing to the next to vent their fury and racism on Mumia. First they claimed to be waiting on paperwork that Mumia’s sentence is a life sentence and not death, but Mahanoy has no death chamber so Mumia would never be sent there if he still had a death sentence. When people saw right through that, Kerestes said that Mumia has to cut his hair before going into general population, now he’s saying that Mumia has to let them take his blood (something Mumia really doesn’t want to do) before he can be in general population. Mumia has been in prison for 30 years so why this sudden demand for his blood now. It is crystal clear that Kerestes and his staff are doing everything they can to keep Mumia in the hole under these tortuous conditions, and it’s all rooted in racism and their fury at all the world-wide attention that stays focused on Mumia, after all these years. They’re furious that their plan to legally kill Mumia ain’t working. They’re torturing Mumia for the same reason the Romans tortured Jesus Christ, because he won’t go along with the lies of the system and racism. Prison policy has nothing to do with what they’re doing to Mumia and everybody should be clear on this. We must be vigilant over Mumia, including organizations that can visit him on an official basis. We must continue to flood Supt. Kerestes with calls and emails. Mumia is up in serious racist KKK territory and we must have his back. We’ve brought Mumia too far to get lax now. Remember, the power of the people is a force to be reckoned with when the power of the people stays consistent and united.

ONA MOVE, Everybody! It's time to step up our actions on behalf of our brother freedom fighter,Mumia Abu Jamal. We need to make it crystal clear that we the people won't stand for this vindictive sadistic torturing of Mumia by those that are furious at not being able to legally murder him. You are being strongly urged to demonstrate your outrage at the torture being done to Mumia specifically and to all freedom fighters generally, by participating in an occupy for Mumia and against mass incarceration action. We (The Occupy For Mumia Committee) are calling on people internationally to occupy The U.S. Justice Dept. on April 24th, 2012. April 24th is Mumia's birthday, his 58th birthday. There is no better day or place to stand up for Mumia and and against the sadism of this system. There is plenty of time to prepare for it, plenty of time to organize buses, raise money for airfares and train fares, etc. People from France and Germany are already preparing to be here, so let's do this, for ourselves as much as for Mumia. I need individuals and organizations, worldwide, to respond to this call, this email, and tell me if you are serious about being in Washington DC. on April 24th for this action. I'm looking for strong positive responses from you, ASAP----Ramona

A very vivid and moving account!!
-------
Comrades, Brothers and Sisters:
Heidi Boghosian and I just returned from a very moving visit with Mumia. We visited yesterday, Thursday, February 2. This was Mumia's second contact visit in over 30 years, since his transfer to General Population last Friday, Jan 27. His first contact visit was with his wife, Wadiya, on Monday, January 30.
Unlike our previous visits to Death Row at SCI Greene and to solitary confinement at SCI Mahanoy, our visit yesterday took place in a large visitor's area, amidst numerous circles of families and spouses who were visiting other inmates. Compared to the intense and focused conversations we had had with Mumia in a small, isolated visiting cell on Death Row, behind sterile plexiglass, this exchange was more relaxed and informal and more unpredictably interactive with the people around us...it was more human. There were so many scenes of affection around us, of children jumping on top of and pulling at their fathers, of entire families talking intimately around small tables, of couples sitting and quietly holding each other, and of girlfriends and wives stealing a forbidden kiss from the men they were there to visit (kisses are only allowed at the start and at the end of visits). These scenes were touching and beautiful, and markedly different from the images of prisoners presented to us by those in power. Our collective work could benefit greatly from these humane, intimate images.
When we entered, we immediately saw Mumia standing across the room. We walked toward each other and he hugged both of us simultaneously. We were both stunned that he would embrace us so warmly and share his personal space so generously after so many years in isolation.
He looked young, and we told him as much. He responded, "Black don't crack!" We laughed.
He talked to us about the newness of every step he has taken since his release to general population a week ago. So much of what we take for granted daily is new to him, from the microwave in the visiting room to the tremor he felt when, for the first time in 30 years, he kissed his wife. As he said in his own words, "the only thing more drastically different than what I'm experiencing now would be freedom." He also noted that everyone in the room was watching him.
The experience of breaking bread with our friend and comrade was emotional. It was wonderful to be able to talk and share grilled cheese sandwiches, apple danishes, cookies and hot chocolate from the visiting room vending machines.
One of the highlights of the visit came with the opportunity to take a photo. This was one of the first such opportunities for Mumia in decades, and we had a ball! Primping the hair, making sure that we didn't have food in our teeth, and nervously getting ready for the big photo moment was such a laugh! And Mumia was openly tickled by every second of it.
When the time came to leave, we all hugged and were promptly instructed to line up against the wall and walk out with the other visitors. As we were exiting the prison, one sister pulled us aside and told us that she couldn't stop singing Kelly Clarkson's line "some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this." She shared that she and her parents had followed Mumia's case since 1981 and that she was overjoyed that Mumia was alive and in general population despite Pennsylvania's bloodthirsty pursuit of his execution. We told her that on April 24 we were going to launch the fight that would win Mumia's release: that on that day we were going to Occupy the Justice Department in Washington DC. She told us that because she recently survived cancer she now believed in possibility, and that since Mumia was now in general population she could see how we could win. She sent us off with the line from Laverne and Shirley's theme song - "never heard the word impossible!"- gave us her number, and asked us to sign her up for the fight.
We're still taking it all in. The journey has been humbling and humanizing, and we are re-energized and re-inspired!!
In the words of City Lights editor, Greg Ruggiero:"
"Long Term Goal: End Mass Incarceration.
Short Term Goal: Free Mumia Abu-Jamal!"

The Gift of DuBois
(col. writ. 2/21/12) © '12 Mumia Abu-Jamal
William Edward Burghardt DuBois(1868-1963) was a true Renaissance man.
He made history when he became one of the first Black men in America to win a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895, but this was just the beginning.
He went on to work for citizenship rights for Black Americans, for Africans throughout the then-colonized world, and for all whom he called 'the darker races'.
He is perhaps best known today for his now-classic The Souls of Black Folk, a beautifully written collection of essays, poems, odes and autobiographical prose that tells the story of Black Americans of the period. He displays an eloquent, elegant advocate for a people who have just recently left slavery, and are facing repression, peonage and death.
He was thus a powerful spokesman for education for those whom literacy was once a crime punishable by death.
He was one of the co-founders of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and wrote scathing editorials for the organization's journal. The Crisis for some 28 years.
His outspokeness and growing radicalism earned him expulsion from the group he helped found, but it didn't stop his work.
Yet he remained as radical as ever and just as outspoken.
In 1960. several years after the Eisenhower presidential election, DuBois condemned the millions of dollars spent to fund the effort for commercials to sow fear and unease in the electorate.
Decades before the Occupy Movement he would criticize U.S. rulers as "Instead of being in- dividuals, are organized corporations who suppress freedom by monopolizing wealth."
He fought for 45 years for African Freedom and Independence.
In 1963. he traded his U.S. citizenship to become a citizen of the West African nation of
Ghana, where he spent his last months of life.

Memories of Maroon
[col. writ. 2/10/12) (c) '12 Mumla Abu-Jamal
His name is almost legendary: Russell 'Maroon' Shoatz, an affiliate of the Black Panther Party, activIst and Black revolutionary.
My teenage memory is sparse about him, other than what read in the paper (and largely disbelieved) As a member of the Black United Liberation Front, I prepared a leaflet in his support, calling for letters to be written to him.
Occasional news flashes intervened, but such reports became all the more rare, and his name faded into the mist of memory, of all except his family and closest comrades.
Until 1995, when I was transferred to Greene's ominous Death Row. Folks assumed I knew him, although we'd never met. Again, we saw each other sparingly, until a cool day, perhaps In 1998, when we were near each other In the 'yard' (actually, the 'cage') separated only by two walls of fencing.
He praised my newest book, Faith of Our Fathers (Africa World Press: 2004), a study of Afrlcan- American and African spiritual traditions.
I was thrilled he read and enjoyed it.
The next time I saw and really talked to him was Friday, December 9, 2011, around 7 a.m., the day after I left Death Row.
We both tried to ignore the biting sub-freezing temperatures in t-shlrts, boxers, under thin, flImsy orange jumpsuits, with 'yard' lasting only an hour.
Even though not formally on 'the Row', I unconsciously expected 2 hours of yard, but Maroon knew better. He launched into an analysis of the Occupy Movement that left me stunned with his brIlliance, insight and succinctness.
I thought to myself, 'whoal This guy has thought long and deeply about this; I've got to sharpen up my game!'
According to Maroon, this new formatIon showed how technology has transformed not only communications, but organizing itself. It cut out the middleman--went straight to the potential activist, and convinced him or her to engage or disengage. He explained that this new social medium gave impetus to organizIng in Tahrlr Square, Cairo, but also in the U.S.-based Occupy Movement.
Organizing would never be the same, he said.
For 3 frigid mornings on C pod, Maroon and I met for just under an hour, and I left impressed each time.
For here was a man who was arguably one of the longest-held Black political prisoners in America (with the possible exception of former Black Panther, Chip Fitzgerald of Callfornia)-- unquestionably one of the longest-held men In Pennsylvania's solitary for over 30 years--and although nearly 70 years old, his mind was as sharp as a cactus, informed, analytical, intuitive, acute.
Three days--three hours--and then I was gone.
Maroon--wrlter, historian, and theorist--remalned, as he does to this day.
His loving family continues to fight for his release from the tortures of 'the hole', by making people aware of the plight of Maroon.

Everybody's Child?
[col. writ 3/24/12]
(c) '12 Mumia Abu-Jamal
A youngster goes out for a snack, simply something to munch on, and a sweet drink to wash it down with.
A man nearby sees him, and 'suspicion' arises.
In a matter of moments, the unarmed teenager is dead, and the shooter calmly claims self- defense.
The cops come, summoned by passersby who witnessed the deadly transaction. They chat with the shooter, perhaps exchange Information In the way usually done at a traffic accident, put in a call to the coroner, and leave.
Imagine the dialogue:
"Hey, guys. It's self- defense." "Yeah--looks like self-defense to me!" "Yeah--It looks like a good shoot." "Yup-the kid punched me!"
"Hey-no biggie--self-defense; good shoot-You have a good night!"
No arrest. No real Investigation.
Case closed-for weeks.
Now, imagine the same events, but with a slight change of place. The shooter is an older, bigger Black man.
The teenager is a white rap fan, who wears a hoodie. He's unarmed. And he's lying face down in the street.
How do you think the cops would've responded then?
The fact Is, you how they would've responded. And it wouldn't have taken weeks, it would've taken minutes.
Who can doubt this?
And what does this say about the System?
Everything you need to know.
Trayvon Martin is just the name you now know. There are many nameless, faceless Trayvons.
And the real tragedy is, there will undoubtedly be more.
For the System isn't broken.
It's rotten.

The Power of Truth is Final -- Free Mumia!
Primary Colors
[col. writ. 3/22/12]
'12 Mumla Abu-Jamal
Since the infamous Plessy v. Ferguson(1896) case, when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the racist principle and Illusion of "separate but equal", many states passed laws for "white primaries", where white voters essentially decided which candidates could run for which office, the Black vote--when and where it existed at all--was but a cynical referendum on candidates chosen by others--both usually sworn to uphold rigid white supremacy.
In 1946 the Supreme Court's Chapman v. King case abolished the all-white primary (in Georgia) as unconstitutional, thus paving the way for the 1954 Brown v. Bd. of Education decision.
That was generations ago, and although white primaries are still illegal, the look of today's Republican presidential primaries eerily reflects'Back to the Future.'
For these candidates seem to be racing for yesteryear, the days of "Ozzie & Harriet", "Dobie Gillis"--and, yes-segregation.
The voters were whiter than the nation's white population, significantly so--with the vast majority in their 50s or older.
In South Carolina, one of the states with the largest Black populations, 98% of primary voters there were of the Caucasion persuasion.
Recently, former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney, won in Illinois with nearly 450,000 votes. That sounds like a lot until you consider that there are around 13 million people in llinois! That means that Mitt "won" with about 1/25th of the vote.
Seriously.
Of all primary voters to date, perhaps 4 million people have voted.
Four million--in a nation with around 312-t0-315 million people. (That's around the size of the population of Connecticut).
This truly is a blast from the past.
Kind of like the movie: "No Country for Old Men."

WARS - For Votes!
[col. writ. 3/7/12] © '12 Mumia Abu-Jamal
It isn't enough that Capitol Hill is chock-full of shameless political whores--oopsl, excuse me, I meant 'sluts'-- who are for sale to the highest bidder.
To be honest, that's simply the nature of U.S.. politics--nakedly so, after the Supreme Court's Citizens United case.
But how pols are salivating to sound the most martial on the issue of Iran is another matter.
Politicians--most who've never even had a fist-fight--are promising carpet-bombing of a country that has never attacked this one, just a few months after a decade of war that has left the U.S. Army in tatters, its veterans shattered in mind and body, and America's image abroad worse than at any time since the Vietnam debacle.
If the carnage of Iraq and Afghanistan has taught us anything, it's that wars are easy to start; but damnably hard to end. Iraq, once the pearl of Middle East secular achievement, has become a charnel house of disaster, desolation and death.
And as for Iran acquiring nuclear capability, the U.S. supported such a program when the nation was under the megalomaniacal rule of the Shah. If it is Interested today, it has every reason to be so, after seeing the American Imperial rape of its next-door neighbor--Iraq.
And why can Israel have hundreds of nukes, while Iran can't have one?
Which country has been more warlike, and more invasive in the region--Iran or Israel?
But, politicians--of both major political parties--are on the take. They lust after lobbies like whores after wallets.
'War?' 'How much?'
As the schools slide into decay; as bridges fall; as the remains of Iraq veterans get tossed out like garbage, every major U.S. politician rattles more sabers of war.
This is an empire gone mad.

Of Presidents & Praetorians[col. writ. 7/29/12 ] © ’12 Mumia Abu-Jamal As the nation slinks toward the presidential election, filled more with dread than hope, they gather in support more of personality than program. They are voting for images crafted by billion-dollar ad campaigns, but also for a temporary emperor of a vast military machine. We are taught that this politician is the most powerful figure in the System and that, for a time, he (or she), rules this structure. But upon reflection, we find that this is but another image, an illusion of power, like a tank filled with cotton candy.L. Fletcher Prouty, a retired air force colonel, and former special operations chief for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has written a gripping history of the Kennedy presidency and the shocking extent to which those in the military and spy agencies ignored or undermined his orders. In his 2011 book, JFK: The CIA, Vietnam and the Plot to Assassinate John F. Kennedy, Prouty centers his analysis on Kennedy’s National Security Action Memorandum # 263 (NSAM # 263, issued Oct. 11, 1963), a document that has been hidden, distorted and misrepresented for decades. Col. Prouty argues that NSAM # 263 was an executive order to have 1,000 U.S. troops removed from Vietnam by Christmas 1963, and all U.S. military forces out by 1965.According to Prouty, Kennedy was intent on ending U.S. military action in Vietnam – an act that made him the enemy for the forces his predecessor, Pres. Dwight Eisenhower called “the military-industrial-complex.”In the Roman Empire , the Emperor was the embodiment of the State, and his power radiated throughout the width and breadth of the realm. But the dirty little secret was that the emperor ruled at the pleasure of the palace guard, the Praetorian Guard, who, in the blink of an eye, ended reigns, and imposed substitutes – often members of the military – to mount the throne of Rome. This was especially so in the later days of empire, when things fell apart.Kennedy threatened to break the CIA “into a thousand pieces” (154). He never lived to make good on that threat. That, at least, is Prouty’s view, and as a high level government and military insider, one well worth considering. He paints a picture, not merely of an assassination, but of a palace coup.Late Rome , on the Potomac . --© ’12 maj [Source: Prouty, L. THE LAST DAY[col. writ. 2/10/13] © ’13 Mumia Abu-Jamal One day, one day relatively quite soon, the administration under President Barack Hussein Obama will come to an end, and enter the realm of history. Eight years will have passed, true. But it will pass with a swiftness that is difficult to articulate. Barack Obama, son of a Kenyan goatherd and unsuccessful civil servant, this most unlikely of candidates, will yield his place to another. And while history will have certainly been made, the stuff of books, museums and presidential trivia, another kind of history, a quieter kind, will also have been made. The history of Black America, written more in song than on paper, will record not the best of times; but, far too often, the worst of times. Unemployment, dropout rates, foreclosures, mass incarceration levels-each and all of these will show significant gains, and paradoxically, the worsening state of the national Black community. Eight years will have passed, and by every measure, Black life will have become more unsteady, more challenging, more raucous – and more brutal. Some will say that the concerns of Black America shouldn’t be his, for he is President of all America; But, before all others, Black Americans have been his most loyal constituency – of all constituencies, why should those who are the most supportive get the least of everything else? What kind of political logic is that? Moreover, what other constituency would accept it? “I’m voting for you, man – but I don’t want nothing! No better schools! I want more police terrorism! I want judges to spit on me more! I don’t want no jobs for nobody in the ‘hood!?” Africans in America have had a long and tortured history of loyalty to institutions that do not return those loyalties. Colonial governments. Political parties. The Army. State governments. And yes, presidents- even Black ones. Symbols are powerful things (and the essence of politics is symbol); but when they are empty of substance, they become hollow.--© ’13 maj========================

if david cash was black,
he would have been charged and sentenced...as he should have been!!!
shame!!!!!
He was just an innocent bystander, he says. A bystander who peered over the top of a toilet stall and discovered--in the women's rest room of a casino on the California-Nevada border--his best friend Jeremy Strohmeyer, 18, struggling with a seven-year-old girl. He tapped his friend's head, he says, knocking off his hat, but couldn't get him to stop. So David Cash Jr. decided to take a walk.
The scene in front of him could not have been any clearer: a nearly 6-ft.-tall teenager and a little girl who didn't yet weigh 50 lbs. locked in the stall of the Primadonna Resort casino at 3:47 in the morning. And yet Cash goes for a walk. He says nothing to the security guards. Less than half an hour later, Strohmeyer emerges and tells Cash he has molested and murdered the child. Cash, stunned, does not ask why. According to grand jury testimony obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Cash does venture one question: Had the little girl been aroused? By the time Sherrice Iverson's broken body is found at 5 a.m., stuffed in a toilet bowl, the two teenagers are already on their way to Las Vegas.

shame!!!!!!!
When the president told the nation, last week, that “African-American young men are disproportionately involved in the criminal justice system,” he was attempting to frame white fears of Blacks as somehow practical and commonsensical, rather than racist. (Obama denied that racism is “endemic” to the U.S. in his
Philadelphia speech
on race, in March, 2008.) In the real world of pervasively racist America, Blacks are hyper-surveilled from damn near cradle to the grave, both within and outside their communities. “Involvement” in the criminal justice system is all but inevitable.
Hyper-surveillance places the assumption of guilt on the peoples and communities that are targeted – which, in the U.S., means all Black people (even Barack Obama – “until I was a senator,” he said). Hyper-surveillance – its justification and practice – stripped Trayvon Martin of the presumption of innocence, marking him with a fatal presumption of guilt.
Two-thirds [17]
of whites still believe his death was justified, despite the clear facts of his innocence. That’s why his death is ordinary – because ordinary white people routinely condone such killings.
His cop-out – that most laws are made at the state level – belies the fact that Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder are champions of mass incarceration, insulating the federal prison system from austerity, even as he slashes Medicare and Medicaid budgets and the sacred cows of defense and Homeland Security. While state prison populations have declined, overall, mainly due to budget pressures, the federal prison system “continues to grow by about 3 percent a year,” according to Mother Jones [19]. For this administration, mass incarceration is top priority.
Obama is, of course, well aware of Kelly’s huge contributions to the cause of racial and ethnic hyper-surveillance, and has given his wholehearted endorsement. The First Black President encourages the killing of more Trayvons throughout the “Homeland,” just as he orders so-called “signature” mass murder-by-drone of males of a certain age in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia (along with whatever women and children may be within the missile’s kill zone).

It is truly akin to Jews cheering the heat in the ovens that slew them....Shame!!!
We'll have US troops in more than thirty African countries enforcing Western land grabs and the corporate neoliberal order, and keeping Africa barefoot, sick, hungry and afraid, but well-armed. And we'll have an even larger overall military budget with more troops and more overseas bases than under George Bush.
During the Clinton and second Bush administrations, the US bankrolled, trained and supplied the armies of 52 out of 54 African nations to ensure that the continent remained the poorest and most war-torn on earth. Under its first black president, the US has stepped up the game with actual deployments of drones, mercenaries, special forces and other US military units in more than thirty African countries to enforce the neoliberal order in which Africa's wealth is diverted from its people into the economies and overseas bank accounts of the West and a handful of native kleptocrats.
Martin Luther King told us decades ago that the number one purveyor of violence on this planet was the US government. Barack Obama, who many fancifully associate with King, hasn't changed that one iota.

The day Barack Obama leaves the White House we'll still have the world's biggest prison state, with three quarters of its inmates black and brown, the insane 40 years War On Drugs, and a black person murdered by police, private security or vigilantes every day or so.
The best the Obama administration and its allies in Congress could do to address the 100 to 1 cocaine to crack penalty disparity was cutting it to 18 to 1 without changing the sentence of a single person already serving unjust time. Hundreds of thousands of black and brown youth are still doing years for mere grams of crack or minute scraps of marijuana. The police and prison state will, as before, remain the nation's preferred means to address poverty, homelessness, mental illness, immigration and many other social, economic and medical conditions.
The Obama administration will have closed and privatized more public schools than at any time in US history.
This is already an accomplished fact. Under President Obama, the US Department of Education has extended the authority to certify school systems to private agencies controlled by champions of privatization like the Gates, Walton Family, and Eli Broad Foundations, and allowed the same actors to write its Race To The Top program, which allocates federal education dollars to the school systems that disband, privatize, and hand over their assets to private actors the quickest.
When Obama leaves office, it will be legal and acceptable for US presidents to unilaterally murder with or without announcement of cause anybody, anyplace on the planet within the reach of US drones, special operators and mercenaries.
When Obama assumed office the US was secretly imprisoning and torturing thousands in at least a dozen countries around the world. We are told now that torture and secret jails are used less often now, that the preferred expedient
