MY HAIR IS LOCKED FOR LIFE!!! - COSMETIC EMANCIPATION - 2/21/98
{2010 - I am still deeply in love with my long, neat, soft, silky, lioness mane...I am eternally happy to be nappy!!!}
1998
I am 34 years old. Since I was a young girl, until today, I have worn eurocentric hairstyles. From hot combs to chemical perms to wigs, I have always oppressed my hair. Today, I liberated my hair from a lifetime of cosmetic bondage via internalized white supremacy. I paid a gifted sister to lock my hair.
It has been one of the most daring and exhilarating experiences of my life. It is invigorating to feel the sun and wind on my scalp. It is empowering to look as my African soul has always felt. It is thrilling to wear my ancient revolutionary politics in my new rebel hair.
I prefer to wear my hair long; so I am struggling to be patient with my tiny short locks as they slowly become my new lioness mane. I have begun compiling a photo scrapbook as my hair blooms into the look I desire. I will photograph that moment and post it to this site. I will rejoice when I look like rebel shero Assata Shakur.
I have longed to wear locks for years. I was urged to move beyond sincere desire to drastic change by several recent incidents in my life: I have survived a betrayal that has left me feeling invincible. I have mended a broken heart that has made me feel brand new. I have fallen in love with an independent film on locks that moves me deeply. It is entitled “Lockin Up” and it is directed by T. Nicole Atkinson. I have a dear new friend named Kim Dixon, who dons perfect locks, which make me proud to share her “do”. And, I have a new lover who is an African queen and I want to be equally regal in her queendom.
Collectively, these incidents make me feel strong enough to endure the stares, the ignorance, the rejection, the discrimination, the curiosity, the drama and everything else that comes with wearing locks.
Legendary reggae dub poet, gifted actor, and star of the classic rebel slave film "Sankofa", Mutabaruka, said it best, in his classic rebel song “Witeman country”: “It no good to stay in a witeman country too long”... It is common to be infected with the poison of white supremacy in a racist country like America. From cosmetic commercials to supermodels, from billboards to magazines, from TV screens to movie screens, and from center stages to centerfolds, straight hair rules. It is typical to emulate such bombardment with the epitome of eurocentric “womanhood” that haunts us everywhere, even on the arms of many of our “brothers”.
Renown author and sage Alice Walker is beautiful. And so are her locks. In “Oppressed Hair Puts A Ceiling on the Brain”, an essay in her classic collection of non-fiction titled "Living by The Word", Alice states:
“...It occurred to me that in my physical self there remained one last barrier to my spiritual liberation...my hair...It was the way I related to it that was the problem...I suddenly understood why nuns and monks shaved their heads...I remembered years of enduring hairdressers, from my mother onward, doing missionary work on my hair. They dominated, suppressed, controlled. Now, more or less free, [my hair] stood this way and that...It never thought of laying down. Flatness, the missionary position did not interest it. It sought more and more space, more light, more of itself. It loved to be washed; but that was it.
Eventually, I knew precisely what hair wanted. It wanted to grow, to be itself, to attract lint, but to be left alone by anyone, including me, who did not love it as it was...(I was now able, as an added bonus, to comprehend Bob Marley as the mystic his music has always indicated he was.) The ceiling at the top of my brain lifted; once again my mind (and spirit) could get outside myself...This was the gift of my growth during my fortieth year. This - the realization that as long as there is joy in creation, there will always be new creations to discover, or rediscover, and that a prime place to look is within and about the self. That even death, being part of life, must offer at least one moment of delight.”
My hair has become spiritual and political. I look at my hair and I feel like I have come home. I stayed away FAR too long...

I GREW MY LOCKS NATURALLY WITH NO BEES WAX, PETROLEUM PRODUCTS, OR CLIPS. MY HAIR IS TOO FINE AND FRAGILE TO ENDURE THESE ITEMS SO I WILL NEVER USE THEM.
I STILL TWIST MY LOCKS GENTLY TO MY SCALP WITH MY FINGERS AS I HAVE DONE SINCE THEY WERE BABY LOCKS IN 1998.
I ONLY USE A BLEND OF LIGHT NATURAL LIQUID OILS AND ALOE VERA GELS ON MY HAIR.
MY SILKY SOFT LOCKS LOVE WATER AND MILD TEA/CLARIFYING SHAMPOOS.
I KEEP MY LOCKS CLIPPED TO ABOUT 48 INCHES...I HAVE CLIPPED SEVERAL FEET OF SOFT SILKY LOCKS SINCE 1998...
EACH LOCK IS DIFFERENT BUT MOST ARE ABOUT 1/2 THE WIDTH OF A PENCIL...
NEED MORE LOCK INFO?...

THE STING OF BETRAYAL
The following was written by Mumia in 1981 to Philly WDAS General Manager Cody Anderson, after he was fired from that radio station allegedly because he no longer fit the "image" of the station.
AN OPEN LETTER TO WDAS GENERAL MANAGER, CODY ANDERSON - Submitted byMumia Abu-Jamal
Several years ago, in late 1978, while working to prepare a newscast on my weekend shift at WDAS news, I turned around to see two men: then-General Manager Bob Klein and you, then-assistant G.M., Cody Anderson, standing in the doorway of the newsroom. I recall clearly that both of you had warm words of praise for me, like ``I just want to say I really like the way you do news!'', and one added, ``You really sound good!''... the words were warm, and welcoming. I smiled, thanked the both of you, and prepared the next hour's newscast.
Several days ago, you, Cody, now General Manager, remarked during a phone conversation with me, ``I respect you, and your work, Mumia, but I believe you have a problem working within the established framework...'' Sound familiar, Cody? Soon thereafter you were quoted by a 'DAS news-staffer as saying, ``He's good, but he doesn't fit the image of the station . . . it's not the image we here at 'DAS want to project.'' Is that a true, honest quotation? IMAGE? ARE WE TALKING ABOUT A RADIO STATION, OR A T.V. STATION? AND WHO'S IMAGE CAN I PROJECT, BUT MY VERY OWN?
In the past 3 years, my hair has grown long, in a form some people call `dreadlocks'. Also in that time, I have worked in `white' radio, producing pieces good enough to garner a 1980 Major Armstrong Award (1st place NEWS) along with other staffers at WUHY's 91 Report. 91 Report whipped KYW for the prize, a coveted one in the broadcast industry. In that time, members of the local Association of Black Journalists elected me President of the group. Although I worked at a so-called `white' radio station, I produced shows dealing with the depth of the African experience in America, repeated prison interviews with members of the MOVE Organization (a group largely ignored by the so-called Black media inPhiladelphiasince their August 8th, 1978 imprisonment), concise, sensitive coverage of their murder trial, many pieces on the housing problems of both Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey, City Council, theRepublic of New Afrika, the Yoruba community in the city, the visit of Rastafarian Bob Marley, Nigerian ex-PresidentNnamdi Azikiwe, and countless others . . . Hugh Masakela, the Pointers, etc. WHAT IS THIS IMAGE NONSENSE?
Because a man's hair grows long, does that hamper his ability to write, report, broadcast, THINK? Why are so-called `dreadlocks' so objectionable, at a so-called `BLACK' Radio station, when it was a non-issue at a white one? Was it objectionable when, for almost 10 years,Georgie Woods wore a conk, a process? Was it objectionable when jocks at 'DAS began to sport the new fad, California Curls, another process? What about a jock who gets a hair transplant, goes under a surgical knife, to `regrow' hair? Any objection to the projection of those images? I didn't think so. When a Black man stops combing his OWN hair, which grows out of his OWN head, in the form of his fathers, and PROJECTS HIS OWN IMAGE, one as African as the African seed that produced him ANOTHER `BLACK' MAN OBJECTS! (YOU KNOW, THAT'S SOME CRAZY SHIT WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, AIN'T IT?)
Long have Blacks in Philadelphia waited for a black-owned, and black-operated radio station ... is THAT IT? IS THIS THE FUTURE THAT BLACKS LONG-AWAITED, DREAMED OF AND PRAYED FOR? BLACKS ARE IN POSITIONS OF SO-CALLED `POWER', BUT IN WHAT CONDITIONS ARE THEIR MINDS, CODY? ARE THEY STILL `WHITER THAN SNOW'? IS THIS THE NEW DAY THAT BLACKS IN THE BROADCASTING BUSINESS LONGED FOR? WHAT A SAD, PITIABLE DAY. WHAT PETTINESS!! WHAT NIGGERISM!!!!
I have been offered several jobs in TV, both here in Philadelphia and across the nation, both paying nearly $35-thousand a year. Was that enough money for me to shave my head, and slip into a 3-piece suit? Not even! And my family continues it's struggle to survive to make ends meet, like most of our people. THERE IS WORK TO BE DONE, CODY, AND AS THIS IS MY HOME, THERE IS WORK TO BE DONE RIGHT HERE AT HOME. IT IS JUST SUCH NONSENSE AS IMAGE THAT KEEPS US SEPARATED AND WEAK ... WHILE WE FIGHT EACH OTHER, WHILE SILLY-ASS POLITICIANS FIGHT EACH OTHER, WHILE MUSLIMS FIGHT BAPTISTS, BUDDHISTS OPPOSE MUSLIMS, DEMOCRATS FIGHT REPUBLICANS, NIGGERS FIGHT NIGGERS, BABIES ARE BEING MURDERED AND BURIED IN SHALLOW GRAVES BY THE SCORE! IS MY IMAGE, MY ESSENCE, CODY? IS THAT SHIT REALLY IMPORTANT AS WE, AFRICANS EVERYWHERE STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL? Is it important to the people who listen to WDAS, at 29th & Dauphin, Germantown & Chelten, or 11th & Kater Sts., whether I comb my hair, or not, or whether I wear a neck-chocker, or not? Aren't they concerned about the world around them NEWS NEWINFORMATION ABOUT OUR LIVES? And who can do it better, Cody? When I worked at 'DAS, I also worked at WUHY which means I worked 7 days a week, 2 days on the weekend for WDAS, and 5 days a week for WUHY. For a measly $100 dollars a week I hustled, worked, time over over-time, newscasts, and anything else ... FOR WHAT? So News Director, Charles Harmon could come up to me, and tell me he needed ``someone more flexible''? HAVE you found it yet? Out of the countless many who have come, and gone thru that newsroom, has someone more FLEXIBLE been found? Has someone more committed, more able, been FOUND? IT WAS WRONG THEN, FORHARMON TO FIRE ME, A BULLSHIT, EMPTY REASON HE KNEW, YOU KNEW, AND I STILL KNOW, IT'S STILL WRONG! But, this time, the wrong will not be borne in silence.
I WILL NOT GRIN, AND BEAR IT, AND WAIT FOR A BETTER OFFER. I WILL NOT PRODUCE WORK MEANT FOR BLACK MINDS AND BLACK EARS, FOR A WHITE RADIO STATION. I WILL STRUGGLE, AND BATTLE, UNTIL THIS ONE WRONG, HAS BEEN RIGHTED. AS FOR MY IMAGE ... LIKE ALL LIFE FORMS, IT WILL CHANGE FOR NOTHING IN LIFE STAYS THE SAME. BUT, I WILL NOT GO UNDER THE BLADE FOR A PAYCHECK FROM YOU! I WILL BE JUDGED, ON MY WORK, MY RECORD AMONG MY PEOPLE, MY COMMITMENT TO THE RIGHTNESS OF THE STRUGGLE OF THE AFRICAN TO FIND DIGNITY WHEREVER HE WALKS, NOT ON THE SMALLNESS OF OTHERS, AND THEIR LACK OF SIGHT. IT IS IRONIC, IS IT NOT, THAT A BLACK MAN SHOULD BLOCK ANOTHER BLACK MAN, FROM PERFORMING WORKS IN THE INTEREST OF BLACK PEOPLE? IT IS A STATEMENT OF OUR TIMES, AND A STATEMENT OF A MENTALITY THAT MUST BE ERASED IF WE ARE EVER TO SURVIVE!
``...HE CAME UNTO HIS OWN, AND HIS OWN RECEIVED HIM NOT...''

BLACKGROUND INFO:
The frame-up of Mumia for the murder ofDaniel Faulknerwas NOT the first time that this system had attempted to frame him:
From the moment Mumia joined theBlack Panther Partyat the age of 14, he became one of the chief targets of Hoover's notorious "Counter-Intelligence Program" (COINTELPRO). Over 700 pages of FBI files were obtained after almost three years of fighting for them, which illustrate wide-ranging collusion between theFBIand the Philadelphia Police Department--particularly its Civil Disobedience Unit (CDU) and Intelligence Division "red squads"-- extending to at least four other security agencies, including the Naval Investigative Service Office, Military Intelligence, Office of Special Investigation and theSecret Service. The files prove that years before Mumia was framed in the death of a Philadelphia cop, the feds repeatedly tried to set him up on serious felony charges--including murder-- without any basis. This was S.O.P. (standard operating procedure) in the government's COINTELPRO war on black militants. The lies range from the absurd--the photo appended to the files is not of Mumia--to the outlandishly sinister.
When the governor of Bermuda was assassinated in 1973, the feds tried to link the killing to Jamal, who had never been anywhere near Bermuda. They also falsely sought to paint him as an "urban guerrilla" associated with theBlack Liberation Army, marking him to be assassinated by the cops the way BLA leader Zayd Shakur was.
The files repeatedly noted that Mumia was an effective and articulate spokesman and writer for theBlack Panther newspaper, who "made the BPP look good because his approach was very positive." Indeed, not one among the steady stream of reports to FBI headquarters on Jamal's Panther activities, which were compiled at the rate of virtually one a week, indicated that he was ever engaged in anything other than public speaking and writing.
Yet despite the FBI's acknowledgement that Jamal "has not displayed a propensity for violence" and was not once found with a gun throughout this period of intense surveillance, the files regularly labeled him "Armed and Dangerous"--a license for the cops and G-men to shoot first and ask questions later.
"They believe what you write, what you say. And it's got to stop. And one day, and I hope it's in my career, that you're going to have to be held responsible and accountable for what you do." --Frank Rizzo, then Mayor of Philadelphia, a statement which is included as part of Mumia's COINTELPRO files.

"To Those Of My Sisters
Who Kept Their Naturals"
-- never to look a hot comb in the teeth
by Gwendolyn Brooks
Sisters!
I love you.
Because you love you.
Because you are erect.
Because you are also bent.
In season, stern, kind.
Crisp, soft-in season.
And you withhold.
And you extend.
And you Step out.
And you go back.
And you extend again.
Your eyes, loud-soft, with crying and with smiles,
are older than a million years,
And they are young.
You reach, in season.
And All
below the rich rouch right time of your hair.
You have not bought Blondine.
You have not hailed the hot-comb recently.
You never worshipped Marilyn Monroe.
You say: Farrah's hair is hers.
You have not wanted to be white.
Nor have you testified to adoration of that state
with the advertisement of imitation
(never successful because the hot-comb is laughing too.)
But oh the rough dark Other music!
the Real,
the Right.
The natural Respect of Self and Seal!
Sisters!
Your hair is Celebration in the world!

"Now, let me be clear from the jump: What you do with the “good” hair on your head is entirely up to you. This is a judgment-free zone. The fact that we shouldn’t be judged by any hair choice we make is the point of this blog.
But I think there needs to be some discussion. And I think there needs to be some healing.
My grandma always said, "If you want to know a black woman, you touch her hair." She said that is where we carry everything — all our hopes, our dreams, our pain.
How freeing it is to release all that ties us into something as shallow as hair?
We have let it own us, obsess us, name us and claim us. And finally, India Arie made a declaration of liberation that we can shout, believe and bob our nappy, natural, permed, press and curled, locked or shaved heads to.
In some respects, we have come a long way when it comes to our hair. Most of us realize how ignorant it sounds to categorize it as good or bad. Many of us have discovered that decades of applying chemicals to it can't be a good thing. And for the most part, I think little black girls today have a healthier perception about hair and have lots more natural and healthy acceptable choices than we did when we were kids.
Marcus Garvey said, “Remove the kinks from your mind, not your head.”
That being said, a lot of hang-ups about hair remain in our heads, put there by a number of things. Every black woman has had a defining hair experience. We've lost our hair, had horrible haircuts or were somehow, real or imagined, unfairly judged by our hair.
Before we began to understand and take pride in our natural beauty, girls were teased and taunted if their hair was short, broken off or nappy, so much so that it literally destroyed ....."

ON DON IMUS
THE SOUND OF SILENCE
I have been deliberately silent about Don Imus’ free fall from neocon graces. My silence has prompted hate mail from those who erroneously assumed that my silence was consent for the antics of a fellow talk radio personality. It was never consent. Correction: It was protest.
I protested the selective hypocrisies of those black men who admirably and righteously attacked Imus for his rabidly racist and sexist slurs against sister athletes at Rutgers. Now, I end that protest and break that silence herein. I do so only because of the deafening volume of the potential fallout of Imus’ welcome and belated firing. I do so because I am unable to be silent anymore.
As a public intellectual and a talk show host, I am keenly aware of the contagion of censorship. Imus has been deservedly silenced! But, who will be next? Who will decide how they are equally deserving?
As a sane intellectual talk host, I choose to avoid the blatant vulgar attacks that have been the foundation of Imus’ media career. Droves of Imus clones, like Rush Limbaugh, “Dr.” Laura, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Neal Boortz, and countless other copycat neocon gas bags (even some in blackface like Larry Elder and Ken Hamblin), chant daily mantras nationwide that are far more racist and sexist than what Imus was foolish enough to utter on air.
The sisters at Rutgers are in no way unique victims of radio shock jocks. They are indeed unique victors. They are very fortunate to have garnered many allies who made enough noise to finally silence Imus. Constantly, Imus has called black male athletes “apes” and “gorillas” on air. Why no outcry then?
What about all the Imus clones on the air all over Amerikkka? Will they be slain next? Or, will those warriors who felled Imus now simply resume their selective silences as they listen to misogynist rap music and watch lewd videos on BET? The ongoing and glaring hypocrisy of allowing black men to produce lyrics, videos, and films that demean and degrade black women daily is FAR louder than the outcry that silenced Imus.
I actually expect geriatric racist and sexist fools like Imus to attack black women. I am historically numb to such ancient racial hatred and verbal abuse. Interracial hatred may indeed be an eternal and global human flaw.
It is the intraracial misogyny that wounds me. I am always deeply wounded when my own “brothers” attack me so routinely, ruthlessly, gleefully, and profitably, that to compare them to Imus is to make him sound like a multicultural saint! To illustrate my point: There is a “columnist” that poses publicly as a lover of black women, yet he regularly curses and vulgarly libels me in emails as no other black male hater I have ever endured. I am adept at ignoring such juvenile wannabees. I will continue to ignore him because he is insignificant enough to ignore.
But, I can never ignore all of the significant “brothers” who disrespect me and my sisters in all media daily. “Brothers” like Eddie Murphy, R. Kelly (When is he ever going to trial?!?), Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and countless other “brothers” who incessantly slander us as “skeezers, skanks, tricks, bitches, hos, hood rats etc...”. I can never ignore all of the national award shows that increasingly give Oscars and Grammies to “pimps” as financial and artistic kudos that encourage these “brothers” to continue such degradation for fame and fortune.
For the record, I never had any love for Imus. But, I thought my ”brothers” were supposed to love me and inspire me to love them. As Alice Walker penned, black men are supposed to hold up half of the sky for us, as we hold up the other half for them. So, why is it that nearly every time I hear a Top 40 rap or soul song, or watch a popular video or film created by a black male, I feel like the sky is falling? Imus may feel like Chicken Little. But, my pain is caused by too many "brothers" feeling that all black women are chicken heads.
The droves of Imus’ in this world have existed and will exist forever. Imus has many racist and sexist media clones that are still getting rich in media outlets all over Amerikkka. But, my "brothers" are not supposed to be stacking papers from the same toxic coffers. Yet, they are making even more millions than Imus has from the sales of their collective misogynistic “art” and souls. Still, there is no outcry against the media pimps who pay these black men to degrade us. Imus has been cut off of the stroll. But, these black male media whores stroll on…
Who will cry out about the sexist evil that so many black men do as loudly as some have cried out about the temporarily unemployed Imus? The sound of that selective silence is very much louder than Imus’ former microphone ever was…
It is amusing and ironic that Imus built his entire career upon vulgar, racist, and sexist antics on air. Yet, he has now been fired for that very same foolishness. For now, Imus has been slain. What will his slayers do now?
Those who slay dragons like Imus are indeed heroes. Will these heroes now vacation or slay other dragons? Many more are lurking and employed in studios everywhere. And, dragon slayers are only as heroic as the last dragon they slew…

From a naturally tressed Queen via email:
Alicia,
Thanks!
My transition was drastic.
One day I looked in the mirror and decided I was sick of the perm. I phoned my son's barber and asked, "How many you got? (How many do you have waiting?)".
When I got there I said cut it off. He nervously said, "Are you sure?..." He cut it all off.
After he finished, the barbers laughed about my son calling before I arrived and pre-warning: "My mother is coming and don't mess with her! (Don't flirt!)". He is kind of overprotective.
I have been all natural since that day, and I have had absolutely no regrets.
Cordially Nappy,
Smiles
