Cracks in the Empire

Despite what talking heads in corporate media proclaim, there hasn't been a revolution in the North African countries of Tunisia or Egypt, or the Persian Gulf's Bahrain. These have been rebellions.

For revolutions transform whole societies - they just don't remove a few leaders.

 That's why much of U.S. reporting is so misleading. They want to call it a Revolution, applaud it, and freeze it, while their handpicked leaders or purchased armies seize the reins of power.

   That said, isn't it curious that most of the countries where rebellions are most widespread are headed by presidents or princes who are U.S. allies?  And these allies have used their armies and police to suppress their people, who oppose deeply unpopular policies of their rulers?

   These rebellions pose serious challenges to the U.S. empire, for they threaten to dismantle the repressive regimes that undergird U.S. Middle East policy. They are still building, still emerging, across the entire region, and espousing a democracy that the U.S. neither wants nor truly supports.

   Remember the indecision with which it initially faced Egyptian unrest?  'Nonviolence on both sides?'

   When one side has tanks, guns helicopter gunships and fighter jets, and the other side has -- well, sticks -- what can that mean? The U.S. wants quiet. Period.

   For, if the choice is between democracy and stability, it'll opt for stability every time, for globalization requires stability, and globalization is the instrument of empire.

   Indeed, it is but another word for colonialism -- the control of other states by a central, imperial state.

   But this empire is also a debtor nation, which manufactures little, and has to beg abroad to pay its vast armies, and support its global apparatus.

   As colonies peel away, or are taken back by their people, the empire decays, first by inches, then by fee, and soon --by miles.

   We may be witnessing the end of something huge.

 'Bombing His Own People?'

   As pro and anti-government forces battle for supremacy in the cities and deserts ofLibya, in North Africa, the tenor and tone of U.S./Western reporting puts the lie to the often heard claim of journalistic objectivity.

   The cheer-leading seems more apt for ESPN than on the nation's leading newscasts, spurred on, of course, by U.S. enmity against Col. Moammar Khaddafy, who has long been a thorn in the side of U.S. Imperial designs on the region.

   Let us not pretend that American efforts are caused by solicitude for the suffering Libyan people, for easily 10 (or perhaps, 30!) times that number suffered under Egypt's President-for-life (and trusty U.S. ally), Husni Mubarak, and the U.S. turned a deaf ear for decades to their cries.

   Only when the people rose up, and took the stage, did the U.S. start mumbling phrases about 'human rights' , and concerns about 'violence'.

   This, from a government that secretly sent (and may still be sending) men to Egyptian hellholes to be tortured via rendition --and killed by the dreaded secret police.

   Indeed, anyone with a smattering of American history cannot even hear the media and political charges of a government attacking or bombing 'its own people' without cringing. For U.S. National Guard  fired semi-automatic weapons at unarmed students in Kent State University, Ohio, killing 4 kids who were protesting the Vietnam war.

   Shortly thereafter, 2 Black kids were shot and killed by cops at Jackson State University, Mississippi, during a similar protest.

   Philadelphia, PA was the site of a government bombing a home, killing men, women and babies. This was the MOVE Bombing of May 13, 1985, where 11 people were bombed to death, and a whole city block reduced to smoldering rubble.

   Were any of these bombers 'brought to justice?'

   And when Israel unleashed Operation Cast Lead against the Occupied Territories in Gaza, killing over 1,400 Palestinians - men, women, children, and the elderly -- and a respected South African judge, Richard Goldstone issued a report calling the strafings, bombings and high caliber shooting of civilians "war crimes", what did the Obama  administration do?  Did it criticize the bombers, or the judge?

   Well -- guess. (If you guessed the judge, you were right, and it gives you some idea of how much the U.S. government cares about human rights, violence, governments bombing unarmed civilians, or the suffering of Arabs under repressive regimes)

   Here's the lesson: Rebels, in every nation, catch hell.

My great friend Credo Mutwa, the famed Zulu shaman in South Africa, tells me that he is receiving threats to his life from around the world over the poem posted on this Website, which he wrote ‘from spirit’ after seeing Barack Obama speaking on television.
It is one thing to be totally scammed by the ludicrous Obama hype, but quite another to make threats to people for the crime of having an opinion that is different from yours. But, then, I guess, naivety and idiocy do often go together.

AFRICOM, the 4-G Upgrade by Sis. Chioma Oruh

In May 2009, President Muammar Gadaffi met with General William “Kip” Ward, former commander of the USAFRICOM to express his support of the “new America”.  Ironically, 2009 was also the same year that Gadaffi decided to nationalize more oil fields than previously under state control in the past. Admittedly, despite his socialist rhetoric Gadaffi remains a complex neocolonial political force that has made many selfish, opportunist and controversial moves while all the time retaining his position as ruler of Libya. Perhaps his over confidence as state ruler for life led him to make the miscalculations made in relationship to US military presence in Africa. Or could he really have sipped on the same kool aid that suggests Obama’s America is somehow a different flavor from any other presidency in US imperialist history? Whatever the case maybe, Gadaffi’s struggles are the gateway drug for many more foreign military exercises to come in Africa.

Imperial Military in Realtime

In the midst of the UN resolutions 1970 and 1973 that sanctioned a no fly zone and gave permissions for NATO sponsored air strikes, Gadaffi has woken to a sobering hangover that this “new America” is no different than the old one.  The question remains, when will the rest of the African world awake to the upgraded version of militarism of white power in black face? Just hours after President Barack Obama (also fondly known as the white house-negro) announced at the National Defense University his plans to order warships into the Mediterranean for “humanitarian reasons” did the US make a move. On the morning of March 29th, a U.S. Navy P-3C Maritime Patrol aircraft, a U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft and guided-missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG-52) engaged with the Libyan Coast Guard vessel Vittoria and two smaller crafts in a military altercation. This is the first big military move after 100+ missiles launched on Libya on March 19th.  Even as Obama made promises to the television audience that he would not commit any ground troops, the A-10 Thunderbolt that just attacked Libya is well known to be an aircraft specifically designed for ground troop support.  Such military moves make the arrival of US troops an inevitable move and war its only mission.

Obama also noted that the military attack of Libya is done in “coalition” efforts led by NATO and endorsed by the Arab league.  Forget that the weak opposition of the African Union hasn’t got much press, what’s most ironic is that Obama didn’t even bat an eye as he made the same illegitimate case for war that George Bush did in 2003 at the dawn of the Iraq War.  Operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya is looking a lot like Operation Iraqi Freedom. It is also important to note that the US contributes the most military weaponry and manpower to NATO, and so whether it’s the war in Iraq or Afghanistan or Libya, NATO is code word for US military command efforts.  In the case of Libya, AFRICOM is already being mentioned with curiosity as militarists at the Pentagon are salivating at the opportunity to give their four-year efforts a test-run. 

AFRICOM: the Centerfold of the US Command Plan

The current political climate in North Africa is truly the perfect storm for AFRICOM to flex its muscles and sharpen its mission to “ conduct sustained security engagement through military-to-military program, military-sponsored activities and other military operations” in Africa.   Born as the brainchild project of Donald Rumsfeld as he stood on his last political leg during the Fallujah scandal in 2006,former President George Bush brought AFRICOM to public attention in a February 2007 press statement announcing this new and humanitarian version of a military command program. It spent its first year as a concept with a $50 million budget focused on public relations.  Four years later, not only does AFRICOM’s have a budget increase of $302 million, but it has its headquarter in Stuggart,Germany, sub-stations at US Embassies throughout Africa and many active programs on the ground.  One of its prominent programs is called “Hub” training as part of the African Partnership Station (APS). “Hub” has trained soldiers and police from Djibouti, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique and Tanzania by US naval forces.  APS focuses on maritime law and concentrates its focus on border nations that allows for US military forces an excuse to remain involved in all strategic trade posts at all times.
AFRICOM, unlike its counterpart in the Middle East and parts of Asia known as CENTCOM, is young and fresh without the historic baggage of dethroning the Shah in the 1950s, fighting Israel’s war for her in the 1960s, getting kicked out of Afghanistan in the 1970s, making a mess in Iran in the 1980s, being exposed as a gluttonous oil-monger in Kuwait in the 1990s and completely going war-crazy with the dual assaults on Iraq and Afghanistan in the first decade of the 21st century.  AFRICOM is part and parcel of a neocolonial makeover plan to give imperialism a new strategy with new leadership and new methods of forwarding an age-old imperial agenda to carry a big stick with a flashing smile. 
Gadaffi is an easy mark to make a moral argument for “humanitarian intervention” as his own contradictions as an illegitimate political patriarch allow for imperial exploitation.  As traumatizing as it is to hear of over 100 missiles dropping on the Libyan people or the Djibouti sub-station (along with the US embassies in Tunisian and Egypt) being used as a launch pad for future military aggression, the worst of military aggression is yet to come. 

The Future of US Militarism, AFRICOM in 4-G

Retired AFRICOM commander, Kip Ward, is currently on a speaking tour to continue to assist with the public relations of AFRICOM as he has passed the baton to General Carter F. Ham. Unlike Ward and many other generals, Ham has extensive combat experience to go along with his officer training. In sum, he is a strategist and has been called the “go-to guy” for Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Why the upgrade? It’s simple. The US is going to war on Africa and will execute an aggressive campaign to intervene in the plethora of unstable states in the region.  It is safe to say that the training wheels are off and AFRICOM as a military machine is fully operational. 
It is estimated the US Defense budget will reach $1 Trillion in 2012 and because AFRICOM’s budget is sure to increase significantly as war necessitates more weapons, infantry support, intelligence operations and administrative staff salaries.  The AFRICOM website alludes to a substantial increase in funding and credits this potential inflated budget to a re-shuffling of monies given to the DoD as part of a $150 Billion “reinvestment for efficiency savings”.  When the real numbers are announced, jaws are most certain to drop.  Yet, any surprised responses on the US stepping up its military aggression on Africa are unfounded. The motivation for sustained military presence in Africa are too many to list, yet, it is important to outline some key places that will be met with greater force in the next few years.
Coastline countries will be of increasing interest for maritime operations. Countries that border places like the Gulf of Guinea (Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria), the Gulf of Aden (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia) and Africa’s borders on the western Indian Ocean (Kenya, Madagascar, South Africa).  Of course Libya, which borders the Mediterranean, is significant and is the christening border location for these increased military strategies. In addition to the oil-resource that border countries offer, they also are strategic trade posts (with the War on Drugs as the perfect excuse to create stations as AFRICOM has already launched the APS training programs).  Each of the countries listed as border countries are sure to make headlines in the next coming months as unstable and creating the necessary political climate for more US “humanitarian intervention”.  Cote d’Ivoire will soon erupt in a civil war, upcoming Nigerian elections is sure to irritate the militants of the Niger Delta, Somalia remains unstable, Ethiopia-Eritrean border tensions are sure to result in conflict in the region, Kenyan and Ghana drug trade will allow for foreign intervention, oppositional forces in Madagascar will make more aggressive moves against the newly elected government and South Africa’s President Zuma will eat his words for speaking out against the US attack on Libya.  Of course, there are also countries of the Great Lakes, with particular focus on the DRC, which are of high interest to the US imperial agenda due to resource wealth. Political instability in the region also gives way to increased military aggression. 

All the while, AFRICOM will continue to make headway and state-sovereignty in every African country (both on the coast and in the mainland) will continue to deteriorate. Of course, this story has a potential plot twist with the birth of a new African liberation movement looking to unify and define itself. Obama is living out the main reason he was allowed the seat of presidency of a historically unapologetic white supremacist nation-state project of Manifest Destiny. The dual dose of a reality check that both AFRICOM and Obama offer is filled with the promise to rejuvenate a defeated liberation movement waiting in the periphery to make real revolution for Africa. And for this reason (and many more) luta continua!

Statement of Cynthia McKinneyNewseum Press Conference on LibyaThursday, 31 March 2011I am pleased to stand with my colleagues today who are outraged at Nobel Peace LaureatePresident Obama’s decision to wage war on Africa in Libya.  At the outset, let me state that Libya is home to tens of thousands or more of foreign students and guest workers.  The students come fromEthiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia.  The messages I have received from concerned Africans state that these young innocent people, inaccurately labeled by the U.S. press as “black mercenaries,” have been trapped in hostile territory and are hated by the U.S.-allied Al Qaeda insurgents.  The press forgot that Libya is in Africa and that Libyans are Black!
I would also like to acknowledge the outrage of the Women International Democratic Federation of Brazil that repudiates the invasion of Libya.  They point specifically to the depressed state of women in pre-Qaddafi Libya and how women now have positions that had once been denied to them.  They note in their communiqué that the National Front of the Salvation of Libya has been financed by the C.I.A. since 1981 and that its headquarters is in Washington, D.C.
In fact, I have received messages and phone calls from people literally all over the world who are outraged at this action.   And because the media cannot be relied upon to tell the truth, I repeat the call that I received directly from Libya yesterday for international observers to go to Libya to tell the world the truth.  I would go.
Sadly, President Obama’s justification for war provides answers that don’t answer, explanations that don’t explain, and conclusions that don’t conclude.  Reports continue to emerge of the US ties to the so-called rebel leaders:  the latest being that Khalifa Hifter, latest leader of the rebel army, spent much of the past 20 years in Langley, Virginia.  He didn’t even move to Baltimore to disguise the relationship!  Moreover, General Wesley Clarke told us that Libya was on the U.W. hitlist ten years ago!
This is nothing new.  This operation smells very much like so many other Africa operations fueled by U.S.-supported individuals who become a rebel force able to threaten an inconvenient leader who stands up to the U.S.  This particular play has been repeated in Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, and Angola and Mozambique before them.  We are not blind; we recognize this play.  And the use of depleted uranium will cause health effects for generations to come.
Pentagon Secretary Gates said “Libya is not part of our vital interest.”  Then why are we there?  Herein lies the conundrum.  President Obama has authorized secret support for its rebels in Libya, just like Miami’s Cuban community has received for decades.
Sadly, our President has chosen to spend $600 million per week in addition to other war costs at a time when the Black community is melting.  As of the most recent Economic Policy Institute study, average Black family wealth was $2,000 while that of Whites was $94,600.  President Obama has done nothing to address the disparities that have existed in this country since slavery.  Clearly, our President should focus on home and improving the lot of the people of this country before launching another war.
Finally, I must say something about the ugly hate language that is emanating more and more from Black political voices.  Any politician seeking votes by exacerbating divisions in our country does not deserve our votes.  I’m speaking specifically about the unfortunate remarks of Herman Cain who should know better.
I stand with those who support the right of self-determination of the Libyan people, including their right to resolve differences without interference from outsiders.

Enemies Unknown

   It is a measure of how powerful the U.S. military is, and how poor the media is, that the nation wages war against peoples and countries it knows nothing about.

   All it apparently takes is a media campaign, calling someone a 'monster', a 'thug', or the clincher, a Hitler, and bombers begin hitting the skies.

   It does it, gets chastened or beaten, vows not to do it again, and of course, does it again -- and again.

   When U.S. forces struck Vietnam (after a lie about an attack in the Gulf of Tonkin), it did so almost as an afterthought; to assist a beaten European ally (France), and in support of what scholars and analysts called 'the domino theory', as if, if Vietnam 'fell', all of Asia would quickly tumble -- like dominoes.

  This theory, like many such ones in support of Imperial wars, was false.  Decades later, one of the war's foremost hawks, Defense Secretary Robert Strange McNamara, would admit that American leaders knew next to nothing about Vietnam, its language, history or culture, and that such ignorance made victory virtually impossible.

   Then Somalia.  Then Iraq.

   Now Libya. How many of us know that much of the internal war is driven by tribal conflicts? That one of the major eastern tribes, the Senussi, lost power and influence when King Idris was overthrown in 1969 by the Free Officers Movement, of which Col. Kaddafi was a part? That many of them don't want democracy but the old kingdom restored?

   That many flew flags of the House of Idris -- a western puppet like Farouk of Egypt or the Shah of Iran -- during initial rebellions?

   Does it seem strange that western so-called democracies are fighting on the side of kings?

   Oh -- and backwards, poor Libya. Did you know that Libya has the highest per capita GOP in Africa -- even higher than South Africa?? Or that it had one of the highest literacy rates in the Arab world? (Almost 20% higher than Egypt?)

   I didn't either.  I read it (in a relatively obscure British journal).  And to check it out, I looked it up.

   We don't know, because it's not in the interest of the corporate forces which owns and utilizes the media, or for us to know.

   10 years after the Afghanistan war started, and 8 years after the Iraq war began, and we haven't learned a damned thing.

The spectacle was so without precedent that it seemed surreal.

An Egyptian [ex-Presldent, in power for almost 3 decades, Is wheeled into court atop a gurney in a cage, and facing charges from the violent chaos that rocked Tahrir Square in the Spring (and also official corruptlon)--charges that could result In the death sentence!

Mohammad Husni Said Mubarak virtually inherited his office, as he was Vice President when Anwar el-Sadat was assassinated In 1981, following a peace deal with Israel. After his installation, he ran Egypt with an Iron fist, using ruthless repression, brutal secret police, torture, and the ever-present acquiescence and billions of bucks of U.S. largesse. Many forget that  he was a high Egyptian general during the 1973 Yom Kippur War against Israel, where he led the air forces.

In the years since Sadat's assassination, Egyptian foreign aid from the U.S. was exceeded by only one nation: Israel.

It Is one of history's great ironies that his long and tumultuous reign as a   modern-day Pharoah began when caged Islamicists were tried in Egyptian courts for Sadat's slaying.

Today, this Egyptian ex-President, America's tightest ally In the region, Husni Mubarak, 83 (!), Is in a cage In a courtroom, charged with ordering the killing of his people.
