WOMEN IN CAGES - THE OTHER PRISONERS...
{2010 - PIC = Prison Industrial Complex = Poor in Cages...Hobama is a rabid elitist who is rapidly funding the PIC. Simultaneously, Hobama is a legendary bankster making billions homeless, jobless, and hungry globally. Beware his fatally toxic and tragically timeless mix.. }1996The New World Order is in progress. There are more African people imprisoned in America than anywhere else, in the history of the world. Male prisoners garner the most media attention, rally the most supporters, and get the most visitors. But, there are thousands of women who are locked in the same cages and rotting inside the same belly of The Beast.
Prisons have become America's new plantations. As downsizing and unemployment impoverish millions outside prison walls, prison labor is booming! Prisoners are producing furniture, electronics, and clothing. They are also answering hotlines as customer service agents. Prisoners do free labor for major corporations like AT&T, TWA, Toys R Us, Eddie Bauer, Lockhart Technologies Inc., and many more. (For a glimpse of such American slave labor on film, see "The Spitfire Grill".)
In a country where inmates are slaves, we Africans have proven our superior skills for over 300 years. As prisons house the new slaves, racist crack laws navigate the New Middle Passage. As always, female chattel suffer uniquely brutal abuses.
African female slaves have always suffered doubly, for their race and gender. We were beaten and raped by the same white masters. As our own children were sold, we were forced to nurse the children of the sellers. Such gender specific abuses continue as female inmates are routinely raped by male prison guards.
Never do we hear of female guards sexually assaulting male prisoners. Yet, female prisoners are raped by male guards daily. In fact, being a prison guard is an ideal job for any rapist. What could be more vulnerable than a woman in a cage to a man who holds the key? What could be better than earning a salary and benefits for your lechery?
Medical care in most American prisons is so horrific that it undeniably constitutes torture. Women generally require more medical attention than men. Our organs are more complex and sensitive to stress. Yet, penal medical care is far worse or nonexistent for women than it is for men.
The biological warfare of AIDS has intensified medical torture. Also, poverty and drug addictions are crimes. All combine to ensure a steady pool of miserable and meek prison laborers.
As poverty by design increases, so does survival by defiance. Those who are starving will eat by any means necessary. Those who cannot work to buy, will scheme to steal. The welfare bill is fueling abject poverty at a frenzied pace.
Stress-releasing casual sex is on the rise. Fatal sexually transmitted diseases escalate nationwide. The crime bill is selectively creating throngs of poor, black, and female felons. Female prison labor pools are overflowing.
In the midst of all this misery, prison stock is booming for neocon investors. While racist politicians lie about genocidal cocaine laws and CIA drug dealers, the prison cages keep closing on our sisters.
The Beast has a belly full of "belly warmers"; a vulgar term coined by slave catchers to describe the African women they raped as cargo during chilly nights at sea. This term is hauntingly prophetic as the icy winds of the New World Order blow record numbers of sisters into the iron bellies of The Beast.
EVERY ONE OF US CAN DO SOMETHING TO LESSEN THE MISERY OF THOSE WHO ARE IMPRISONED. Please find some time to do at least one of the following, as soon as you possibly can:
Volunteer your services to any prison outreach organization. There are many of them. They all desperately need your help. Check your local directories. Or, call one of these in my area for a reference in your own area:

They are not all psycho demons as films portray.Prisoners are our extended family. They are everyday people who fell into the pathological pitfalls of poverty/crime. They deserve your empathy.Visit someone in prison. Sponsor a formal event inside a prison to educate or cheer those who are caged. Prisons are being designed to increase brutality daily. Soon, all visitors may be outlawed. So, visit now, while you still can.
Send a gift to someone in prison. Send them a postal money order. Simple basic necessities and pleasures like toiletries and candy can be purchased in prison. Such simple and small items can make such huge differences in levels of isolation and depression.
Urge your pastor to ask each member of your congregation to adopt a prisoner. Most churches are gaudy shrines/pseudo-christian club houses. Make your own church a superior exception to that rule. Every church is near a prison. Every prisoner is a sibling in the family of God.
DEMAND AMNESTY FOR ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS!!! Geronimo Ji Jaga left HUNDREDS of framed fellow warriors behind. HUNDREDS more are in exile like shero Assata Shakur. The New World Order is in progress. Poverty is escalating by design. Martial law is intensifying by decree. When you are imprisoned, you will understand the horrors of incarceration, and empathize belatedly with the hell that so many of our sisters now endure...
Organize and protest our fascist and racist government's enforcement of COINTELPRO, which retroactively, covertly, and unapologetically continues to murder our revolutionary rebels!!!

Bro. Charles (1951-2010)
[col. writ. 7/25/10] (c) '10 Mumia Abu-Jamal
His name was Ali Shabazz, but most people called him Bro. Charles.Born Leslie Charles Beasley, in June, 1951 in Phila, PA, he was drawn, like many boys his age, to gang life.
As anyone knows, gang life is a hard life, and Charles, despite his relatively short stature, was as hard as they come. Few saw his sensitive side, but he had a wonderful sense of humor, a rich belly laugh, was a talented artist with a caring heart for younger people.
In 1980, after a series of stick-ups that went badly, he was sent to Death Row, and it was there that Bro. Charles died, not by the hangman's noose, but by "natural causes" (as if any death or life on death row could be considered natural)
His health deteriorated seriously in the last few years, and substandard treatment by prison health personnel certainly didn't do much to arrest that deterioration.
He was a longtime member of the Nation of Islam, from whence came his names: Charles X, and Ali Shabazz.
Bro. Charles was 59.

‘Black August’ by Marilyn Buck
Would you hang on a cliff’s edge
sword-sharp, slashing fingers
while jackboot screws stomp heels
on peeled-flesh bones
and laugh
“let go! die, damn you, die!”
could you hang on 20 years, 30 years?
20 years, 30 years and more
brave Black brothers buried
in US koncentration kamps
they hang on
Black light shining in torture chambers
Ruchell, Yogi, Sundiata, Sekou,
Warren, Chip, Seth, Herman, Jalil,
and more and more they resist: Black August
Nat Turner insurrection chief executed: Black August
Jonathan, George dead in battle’s light: Black August
Fred Hampton, Black Panthers, African Brotherhood murdered: Black August
Kuwasi Balagoon, Nuh Abdul Quyyam captured warriors dead: Black August
Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ella Baker, Ida B. Wells
Queen Mother Moore – their last breaths drawn fighting death: Black August
Black August: watchword
for Black liberation for human liberation
sword to sever the shackles
light to lead children of every nation to safety
Black August remembrance
resist the amerikkan nightmare for life
Marilyn Buck wrote this poem for Black August 2000. She was released July 15, 2010, after 25 years as an anti-imperialist political prisoner. Then suddenly, only 19 days later, she was gone. Her comrade and fellow former political prisoner Linda Evans broke the sad news: “Our dear comrade Marilyn Buck made her transition yesterday (Aug. 3, 2010) at 1 p.m. EST peacefully and surrounded by friends.” Sister Marpessa Kupendua wrote: “Former political prisoner Marilyn Buck made her transition. Peace and blessings be upon her revolutionary soul! Let her passing motivate us to be on point for all those denied medical care within the walls. Serious illnesses ARE death sentences! Much respect to her struggle on our collective behalf and all those who loved her so strong in her final days!”

"The New Jim Crow" [Book Review: 6/30/10] (c) '10 Mumia Abu-Jamal
{Alexander, Michelle, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. (NY: The New Press, 2010, pp.290)
The book, The New Jim Crow, offers an unflinching look at the US addiction to imprisonment, and comes up with a startling diagnosis; American corporate greed, political opportunism and the exploitation of age old hatred and fears have congealed to create a monstrous explosion in the world's largest prison industrial complex. Further, the author, a law professor at Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law, Michelle Alexander, digs deep into US history, and deeper still into US criminal law and practice to conclude that the barbarous system of repression and control known commonly as Jim Crow, had a rebirth in this era. That's why she calls it: The New Jim Crow.
This system of legal discrimination came into being much as the first one did. After the rout of the South by the Civil War, millions of newly freed Africans exercised these new rights under Reconstruction. Black men became senators and legislators across the South. But this period was short lived, and as soon as possible, states passed harsh laws known as Black Codes, which denied rights and criminalized behavior by Blacks, and exposed them to the repression of southern prisons, where convicts were leased out to labor for others; it was the rebirth of slavery by other means.
This present era began at the height of the US Civil Rights Movement, when millions of Blacks fought for their rights denied for more than a century.
Alexander concludes that this new system, this new coalescence of economic and political interests, targeted Blacks, especially those engaged in the drug industry, as the human capital with which to provide massive construction, huge prison staffs, and the other appendages of the apparatus of state repression.
But perhaps Alexander's most salient point is her finding that America's Black population constitutes a 'racial caste' that feeds and perpetuates mass incarceration [195]
Indeed, every other societal structure supports this superstructure, from broken schools, to de-industrialization, to population concentration in isolated urban ghettoes, to the violence of police, and the silence of the Black Middle class.
One might argue that such a claim seems unsustainable when we see a Black president, hundreds of black political figures and those in entertainment and sports. But Alexander explains that every system allows exceptions, for they serve to legitimize the system and mask its ugliness and its gross effects upon the majority of Blacks.
For example, while it's well-known that apartheid was an overtly racist system, it allowed Asian and even African American diplomats to live and work in such a regime, by the political expediency of identifying them as "honorary whites" in their official papers.
When comparing both systems, Alexander argues that the US imprisons more Blacks both in raw number and per capita thanSouth Africa at the height of apartheid!
The New Jim Crow - indeed!

Towers & Tenements[speech writ. 1/7/11] (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
Gentlemen; Gentlewomen; Scholars and Teachers -- Greetings to you all!
I come today with a message from the farthest distance possible from yours. While many of you spend your days, your hours - and indeed, your lives in these towers, if not of Ivory, of brick and steel - life in America's dungeons could not be more remote.
For, as you know, better than most, America has built far more prisons in the last few decades than universities; more cages than classrooms.
And with upwards to 21/2 million men, women and juveniles in prison; more in percentage than any other nation; indeed, with almost a quarter of all prisoners on this earth (and barely 6% of its total populations), who can deny that we are in the grips of a prison industrial complex?
Learned men and women -Towers are places of concentrated wealth and/or power; places in antiquity of defense against the angry and anguished (and often hungry) masses (The mob) They were homes of the aristocracy. In many ways, they remain so; for the dreads, fears, and woeful inevitabilities of prison loom over their lives as the old mansions did in the Old South.-- (instructive, is it not, that we used the words 'the big house' for the mansion and the prison?)
The young go to substandard schools that are but training grounds for prison; the mothers meet their passage from freedom to prison with mixed hearts; dread at the loss of their loved one; and quiet relief at the hope that a prison represents more safety than the beleaguered public streets!
Brothers and Sisters; Professors! Why is not the prison, the great looming tower of African-American nightmare and reality, not subject to serious and sustained study?
I can almost guarantee you all that if you have family in the 'hood (and I know many of you do!), somebody is in the joint; or goin' in; or comin' out!
Build, with your minds, a bridge between the twin towers - the prison and the academy.

—-The New Invasion of Africa—–
byAmiri Baraka
So it wd be this way
That they wd get a negro
To bomb his own home
To join with the actual colonial
Powers,Britain,France, add Poison Hillary
With Israeli and Saudi to make certain
That revolution in Africa must have a stopper
So call in the white people who long tasted our blood
They would be the copper, overthrowLibya
With some bullshit humanitarian scam
With the negro yapping to make it seem right (far right)
But that’s how Africa got enslaved by the white
A negro selling his own folk, delivering us to slavery
In the middle of the night. When will you learn poet
And remember it so you know it
Imperialismcan look like anything
Can be quiet and intelligent and even have
A pretty wife. But in the end, it is insatiable
And if it needs to, it will take your life.

The War That Never Ended
[col. writ. 4/10/11] (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
150 years ago, shells were lobbed into Fort Sumpter, South Carolina, and the Civil War began.
In 4 years, over 600,000 combatants were killed, more than in Vietnams long, 9-year war.
Isn't it interesting that the war fought to preserve slavery was fought in the nation called "land of the free?"
From 1861 to 1865 the war raged all across the country.
At war's end the U.S. Congress passed the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, and it would take nearly 100 years for the courts to even begin to recognize them (for most of that time, they granted constitutional rights to corporations -not Black persons.) For the courts supported white supremacyrather than Black equality.
While one of the biggest offenders was the Supreme Court, American presidents also played key roles in supporting policies designed to restrict, deny and undermine Black rights.
Under state laws, Blacks were denied the right to vote, to enjoy public accommodations, to hold public office, and to purchase homes in most neighborhoods.
Schools, from elementary to college were both racially segregated and economically under-funded.
150 years later, and urban schools remain segregated by class, as well as woefully underfunded.
Over 50% of kids in big-city schools, like Baltimore, New York and Chicago are drop-outs. such schools are often more segregated today than they were 50 years ago, and the political elites are pushing to privatize education.
It's been a century and half since that bloody war began, and still legal scholars like Michelle Alexander (author, The New Jim Crow), argue that the Black poor and working class constitute a "caste" in American society, subject to disparate and discriminatory treatment in the nation's courts, and virtual social exclusion, afterwards.
For too many people, the war continues.

American Corrections
[col. writ. 5/18/11
(c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
At the western Pennsylvania state prison in Woods Run, Pittsburgh, prisoners and guards alike made the phenomenon of imprisonment more hellish than usual.
That's because, according to at least one broadcast report, men at the medium to minimum securitylock-up, particularly those convicted of sexual assaults against children, were raped, by other prisoners - and by several guards - with ranking staff turning a blind eye.
While the radio report was unconfirmed, the PA Dept. of Corrections (DOC) did the unprecedented. They fired the prison's warden, two deputy superintendents, and even the major there-something virtually unheard of in this business.
Eight prison guards have been suspended without pay earlier this year (although seven of them have not been publicly identified.)
An Allegheny County grand jury is presently investigating the sexual assault charges. No state government official has commented publicly on the claims, but certainly the firing of the prison's highest ranking staff suggests that 'something is rotten in Denmark.'
What makes these incidents particularly poignant is the state prison in Pittsburgh, which was closed back in 2005 because of security and budgetary concerns, isn't the maximum security prison it once was. It reopened in 2007 as a treatment center, a kind of medical unit for men suffering from addictions, age related physical ailments, or serious psychological issues. That's why it was re-classified as a medium-minimum security facility.
That these men, who were promised medical treatment, were treated so basely by other prisoners - and reportedly by guards as well- gives us some sense of precisely how poisonous American 'corrections' has become.
Is there any wonder that American soldiers, many who worked as prison guards stateside, behaved so badly in Iraq and abroad?

In Memory of G. Ji Jaga
Some say they, "can't get no satisfaction", and sing a sad song over trifles.
I too have grieved over trifles,
Yet though I am sad, I have some satisfaction
For I think vindication is precious,
And he was vindicated a decade and a half before he returned to our faith filled ancestors.
I have some satisfaction,
For I witnessed an adamantine integrity,
(yes adamantine means diamond-like, hard, bright, unbreakable),
Set in a sterling character that valued humanity more than diamonds and gold.
Every effort to Free Geronimo was justified and rewarded by his conduct;
Everyone who joined the struggle to Free All Political Prisoners was renewed and refreshed by his commitment to humanity and clean water,
Every where he went he left evidence of compassion and good deeds.
So, although I'm sad, I have some satisfaction,
Geronimo is free! By Sistah ShebaBPP
==========
Geronimo Jijaga Pratt - by Lynne Stewart
The untimely death of Geronimo Jijaga Pratt has hit me very hard because it reminds me of all the work yet to be done. Not only the liberation of the oppressed to which Geronimo dedicated himself as a young man and again after his release but also the liberation of those locked away in the torture chambers of this Gulag USA.
The loss of Geronimo is so difficult because he was robbed of the opportunity to contribute to the long term struggle for liberation of the Black community in his most productive years. Yes, there was always a mention or a placard "Free Geronimo Pratt !" but his ability to publicly inspire and uplift was jailed at San Quentin. He was there in his 20's and 30's and 40's. The movement suffered...Hoover and his like triumphed. We must now undo this evil.
By torture chambers I mean, of course, the Prison "holes", those places of solitary confinement, where loneliness and total lack of human contact, drive people mad. Even the strong are "modified". Many of those who have been jailed in this way arepolitical prisoners. Many of them have been in 24 hour lockdown for more than 20 years and face the rest of their lives there. I really don't need to name names--they are engraved on my heart and I hope on yours. Just check the Jericho website for a complete rundown. And also, dare I say it, the Project Salam listing of Muslims wrongfully imprisoned. If we are spared and are still in the world and able to act and activate--this is our primary obligation if we think of ourselves as political, to take up this struggle and liberate those behind bars. As Mutulu Shakur wrote to me (and I paraphrase) "The faith of those who gave their all and still wait for the dedicated comrades, the People, to bring them home, is greater than any religious devotion. "
Geronimo's death reminds us of this paramount obligation. The enemy, in the BOP, the Nebraska and New York and Louisiana prisons will never act until those unjust imprisonments becomes more detrimental to them and their system than freeing our brothers and sisters. Action! Action! Change! Change!

DYING FOR SUNLIGHTa commentary byMUMIA ABU JAMALJuly 15, 2011 Today, at the notorious California super-maximum prison, Pelican Bay, hundreds of prisoners are on a hunger strike. As of July 1, 2011 a number of men ceased eating state meals in protest of horrendously long-term confinement, government repression, lack of programs and the hated gang affiliation rules. According to California Prison Focus, the health of some the men are dangerously deteriorating. Some have ceased drinking, as well as eating and haven’t urinated in days. Some are threatened by renal failure, which can result in death. Why? The demands of the strikers seem relatively tame, which gives us some insight into the level of repression. The five core demands are: 1. Individual instead of group responsibility.2. Abolition of the “gang-debriefing” policy, which endangers both those who debrief and/or their families.3. An end to long-term solitary confinement.4. Adequate food, and5. Constructive programs, such as art, phone privileges and the like. A sub-demand is adequate natural sunlight – sunlight. There are few things more torturous than dying by starvation. These men are killing themselves potentially for fresh air and sunlight, and about a third of California prisoners, 11 out of 33 prisons, have joined them. Contact the Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity Coalition to find out how to support this effort for human rights. RAPE BLOCKS
(col. writ. 9/29/11 © ‘11 Mumla Abu-Jamal
Several months ago. I reported on the firing of a trio of high-ranking prison officials In connection with a series of sexual assaults in a Southwestern Pennsylvania prison.
Few news agencies took up the story. especially national ones. This was astounding. given the nature of the charges: prison guards both raping men and forcing others to assault them, on their very whim. Prison administrators turning a collective blind eye.
Is this not news?
Since that initial report. one prison guard (who spent months on suspension). Harry Nicciletti, has been arrested and faces over 9O-90!--charges stemming from the events.
According to the local DA. 11 other guards will soon be arrested on related charges.
When news first broke of the scandal, it forced some prison observers to recall ex-President George W. Bush. who, after the rise of the Abu Ghraib scandal in Iraq. pointed to Saddam Hussein's usage of the prison. and particularly made note of his "rape rooms."
Well--once again. Americans have gone one better--from rape rooms to rape blocks!
In the prison known as State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Pittsburgh, those convicted of sex crimes were targeted for beatings. rapes--or both. Sometimes by prisoners, sometimes by guards- -sometimes by both.
Boy--talk about 'corrections!'
Some men filed institutional grievances (or prison internal complaints) which were invariably dismissed or simply ignored. Other tried to file time-consuming actions in court, where most fell into black holes.
It is worthy to note that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the notorious and vicious slaughter at Attica--a maximum-security prison in upstate New York.
Attica was supposed to be the bellwether of change to American corrections. But, if anything, it shows the limits of liberal reforms, which can be washed away in another season.
Limits were promised by liberal politicians. years later. neo-liberals would push more restrictive laws that shuttered courtrooms from prisoners. and made civil suits an obstacle course.
They joined with conservatives to build the prison-industrial-complex into the monster that it is
today (boy--talk about bipartisanship!).
In many ways. they made the scandals which we see today--and the rape blocks--possible.

Days of Rage,Rebellion & Revolution
[rev. writ. 9/28/11] © ’11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
[Book Review: Gilbert, David. Love & Struggle: My Life with SDS, the Weather Underground and Beyond. (Oakland, CA: PM Press, forthcoming--Dec. 2011). [mss. type/pp.537]
Perhaps it is the times: the election of a Black president. the renewal of the right-wing, or even something so prosaic as the press of age, but there has been a resurgence of Weather Underground material of late.
David Gilbert, a published author (No Surrender, a long time prison AIDS prevention activist. and a founding member of the Weather Underground. has joined that number.
Without commenting on the nature and/or motivations of many of the other works, Gilbert'sreasons for writing this volume. which he has strongly resisted in the past, is clear.
First, he pens it because his adult son,. Chesa, requested he do so, announcing his previous work "almost all analytical." Like many men and women of this new, Twitter-age, what seems most important is the personal, rather than the political. Secondly, hundreds of activists In various movements have written to him, and while they seemed to be looking back at Weather as an almost mythical organization, Gilbert felt the need to demythologize both the movement and the era, and speak openly of the mistakes made as well.
This is not 'Glory Days'. It Is a reflective, critical (and self-critical), gripping. and yes, tragic account of an important and pivotal movement in the 20th century. How it came to be, the forces which brought it into being, as well as the internal and external forces which ripped it asunder, are here for all to see--naked as a newborn. What theory should we follow? What principles should drive our working inter-organizational relationships? Should we adopt Maoism? Marxism-Leninism? How do we fight the State? These questions and more are hashed out. Some more thoroughly than others.
Gilbert Is a fine writer, and despite the understandable reluctance to write this kind of movement memoir, (many In the movement looked down on such things as individualistic) he does so with remarkable honesty. sensitivity and Insight.
What makes this work shine, however. is its forthright take on an issue that, even today is regarded with alarm.
Race.
Race--that is, the reality of race as lived by real people, in Vietnam, and In Harlem, opened an idealistic Jewish boy's eyes into the dangerous knowledge that things weren't as his teachers-- or even his parents (not to mention his rabbi) said.
Inquisitive, intellectually curious, questioning by culture and training, he sought his own answers of why the world was the way it was--and thus, albeit unknowingly, he. began his trek towards the revolutionary road. We learn, as in the case of many of his generation, that the powerful, uncompromising orations of Malcolm X stirred many from their slumber. While a student at Columbia, Gilbert attends a speech by him--3 days later. the Muslim minister was assassinated. He also recounts the hypnotic and captivating power of Black music (Rhythm & Blues), that opened up a young, sensitive soul to the humanity and beauty of Black people. (We can only wonder, what message lies encoded in today's Black music, and what resonates in the minds of today's white youth who listen?)
Gilbert has trod this ground before (of shortcomings of the white radical movement of the era) in some of his essays In No Surrender, but here, he recounts the missteps, the supremacist attitudes, and yes, the betrayals that occurred on that long. red road, one which has substantial echoes In American history whenever whites and Blacks opted to join hands against the rulers.
With Love & Struggle, DavId Gilbert adds heart and bone to the stuff of distant (mid-20th century?) history. He, in a sense, explains why we are where we are, in this schizophrenic nation,
where our stated claims of equality fall lifeless and as dead as turned leaves before they hit the ground. In a sense, this work is a testament to the road not taken--against racism (In fact and not merely in symbol) and anti-Imperialism (as the nation grapples In a slew of Imperial wars).
To Illustrate by way of example and pure serendipity, this very day, when I have completed the mss., a news report interrupts from a tinny whining local radio station. A. 60lsh prison guard at SCI-Pittsburgh has just been indicted for over 90 counts of sexual abuse of prisoners, many of whom are themselves, In prison on sexual abuse charges (usually of children). The reporter, reading a wire service account, quotes the Allegheny County DA as saying "at least" 11 other guards will be arrested shortly for similar charges, stemming from the rapes of imprisoned men--or their activities in forcing other men to sexually assault other prisoners. Now, one wonders, why is this even remotely relevant to the review of Gilbert's book, a trek through the '60s, '70s and '80s?
Because Gilbert and his cohorts, idealists all, sought to transform American society, in part because 40 years ago, they saw the savagery the State unleashed at Attica, the upstateNew York prison, where 43 people--prisoners and guards alike--were slaughtered by state troopers on orders of then-Gov. Nelson Rockefeller. Gilbert and his comrades sought to wipe that kind of racist violence from the nation's history.
Forty years later, we have rape prisons--unofficial, yes. But no less real. And for millions of Americans who pride themselves as reasonable, good, Christian folks (well, white folks), they could not care less.
They fought, imperfectly, to be sure, to bring forth another future--certainly not this.
For that, they should be studied.
For that, they should be taken seriously.
For that,Struggle should be read.
For that, they should be remembered.

Every prison has its own mythos, (think Alcatraz, Sing Sing, Attica), its own rhythm. hard, cool, tight, relaxed, severe or super max. And every prison is run by class -as in how courts or administrators have classified a crime according to whose interests are threatened. For example, in every 'hole" in the State, where all Death Rows are sited, men and women with the worst sentences live the least contentious lives. If they can afford it, (really if their family can), they TV, radio and other amenities -if they can afford it. Some work prison jobs for the glorious wage of around $35 to $50 a month (yes, a month) There, every mind is attuned to the ultimate sentence -death - and against such an immensity, amenities seem trivial. Yet Death Row is a class (as in classification) and beyond it lies a chasm of classifications that are as maddening as they are mundane - AC (Administrative Custody), DC (Disciplinary Custody), PC (Protective Custody), and beyond.
All are lock-up statuses, all have their distinct rules of what is or isn't allowed, and all have degrees of repression. Every major U.S. history book has described America as virtually classless, with rigid class distinctions more a British or European thing. How then can a Nation that claimed classlessness give birth to such institutions that are so riddled with class differentiations? Because America was never classless, and not only did it have rigid classes, it had (and has), caste, more rigid than stone. Millions of Blacks live in such a caste, as noted recently in Michelle Alexander's excellent work, The New Jim Crow. The ruling, wealthy class built prisons and courts to protect them and their wealth from the masses. They also built the ideological illusion of classlessness, which is maintained through their media. They brayed about freedom, while erecting the most massive prison complex (the prison-industrial-complex) this earth has ever seen. The built Prison Nation.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION TO GET 'MAROON' OUT OF THE TORTURE OF SOLITARY: http://russellmaroonshoats.wordpress.com/petition/ AND PASS IT ON!
Memories of Maroon
[col. writ. 2/10/12) (c) '12 Mumla Abu-Jamal
His name is almost legendary: Russell 'Maroon' Shoatz, an affiliate of the Black Panther Party, activIst and Black revolutionary.
My teenage memory is sparse about him, other than what read in the paper (and largely disbelieved) As a member of the Black United Liberation Front, I prepared a leaflet in his support, calling for letters to be written to him.
Occasional news flashes intervened, but such reports became all the more rare, and his name faded into the mist of memory, of all except his family and closest comrades.
Until 1995, when I was transferred to Greene's ominous Death Row. Folks assumed I knew him, although we'd never met. Again, we saw each other sparingly, until a cool day, perhaps In 1998, when we were near each other In the 'yard' (actually, the 'cage') separated only by two walls of fencing.
He praised my newest book, Faith of Our Fathers (Africa World Press: 2004), a study of Afrlcan- American and African spiritual traditions.
I was thrilled he read and enjoyed it.
The next time I saw and really talked to him was Friday, December 9, 2011, around 7 a.m., the day after I left Death Row.
We both tried to ignore the biting sub-freezing temperatures in t-shlrts, boxers, under thin, flImsy orange jumpsuits, with 'yard' lasting only an hour.
Even though not formally on 'the Row', I unconsciously expected 2 hours of yard, but Maroon knew better. He launched into an analysis of the Occupy Movement that left me stunned with his brIlliance, insight and succinctness.
I thought to myself, 'whoal This guy has thought long and deeply about this; I've got to sharpen up my game!'
According to Maroon, this new formatIon showed how technology has transformed not only communications, but organizing itself. It cut out the middleman--went straight to the potential activist, and convinced him or her to engage or disengage. He explained that this new social medium gave impetus to organizIng in Tahrlr Square, Cairo, but also in the U.S.-based Occupy Movement.
Organizing would never be the same, he said.
For 3 frigid mornings on C pod, Maroon and I met for just under an hour, and I left impressed each time.
For here was a man who was arguably one of the longest-held Black political prisoners in America (with the possible exception of former Black Panther, Chip Fitzgerald of Callfornia)-- unquestionably one of the longest-held men In Pennsylvania's solitary for over 30 years--and although nearly 70 years old, his mind was as sharp as a cactus, informed, analytical, intuitive, acute.
Three days--three hours--and then I was gone.
Maroon--wrlter, historian, and theorist--remalned, as he does to this day.
His loving family continues to fight for his release from the tortures of 'the hole', by making people aware of the plight of Maroon.

When the president told the nation, last week, that “African-American young men are disproportionately involved in the criminal justice system,” he was attempting to frame white fears of Blacks as somehow practical and commonsensical, rather than racist. (Obama denied that racism is “endemic” to the U.S. in his
Philadelphia speech
on race, in March, 2008.) In the real world of pervasively racist America, Blacks are hyper-surveilled from damn near cradle to the grave, both within and outside their communities. “Involvement” in the criminal justice system is all but inevitable.
Hyper-surveillance places the assumption of guilt on the peoples and communities that are targeted – which, in the U.S., means all Black people (even Barack Obama – “until I was a senator,” he said). Hyper-surveillance – its justification and practice – stripped Trayvon Martin of the presumption of innocence, marking him with a fatal presumption of guilt.
Two-thirds [17]
of whites still believe his death was justified, despite the clear facts of his innocence. That’s why his death is ordinary – because ordinary white people routinely condone such killings.
His cop-out – that most laws are made at the state level – belies the fact that Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder are champions of mass incarceration, insulating the federal prison system from austerity, even as he slashes Medicare and Medicaid budgets and the sacred cows of defense and Homeland Security. While state prison populations have declined, overall, mainly due to budget pressures, the federal prison system “continues to grow by about 3 percent a year,” according to Mother Jones [19]. For this administration, mass incarceration is top priority.
Obama is, of course, well aware of Kelly’s huge contributions to the cause of racial and ethnic hyper-surveillance, and has given his wholehearted endorsement. The First Black President encourages the killing of more Trayvons throughout the “Homeland,” just as he orders so-called “signature” mass murder-by-drone of males of a certain age in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia (along with whatever women and children may be within the missile’s kill zone).

That scandalous bankster FASCIST Hobama makes it EASIER each day...even as his blind adoring Nazis dare to ignore his deeds/their own doomed reality!
It is truly akin to Jews cheering the heat in the ovens that slew them....Shame!!!
We'll have US troops in more than thirty African countries enforcing Western land grabs and the corporate neoliberal order, and keeping Africa barefoot, sick, hungry and afraid, but well-armed. And we'll have an even larger overall military budget with more troops and more overseas bases than under George Bush.
During the Clinton and second Bush administrations, the US bankrolled, trained and supplied the armies of 52 out of 54 African nations to ensure that the continent remained the poorest and most war-torn on earth. Under its first black president, the US has stepped up the game with actual deployments of drones, mercenaries, special forces and other US military units in more than thirty African countries to enforce the neoliberal order in which Africa's wealth is diverted from its people into the economies and overseas bank accounts of the West and a handful of native kleptocrats.
Martin Luther King told us decades ago that the number one purveyor of violence on this planet was the US government. Barack Obama, who many fancifully associate with King, hasn't changed that one iota.

The day Barack Obama leaves the White House we'll still have the world's biggest prison state, with three quarters of its inmates black and brown, the insane 40 years War On Drugs, and a black person murdered by police, private security or vigilantes every day or so.
The best the Obama administration and its allies in Congress could do to address the 100 to 1 cocaine to crack penalty disparity was cutting it to 18 to 1 without changing the sentence of a single person already serving unjust time. Hundreds of thousands of black and brown youth are still doing years for mere grams of crack or minute scraps of marijuana. The police and prison state will, as before, remain the nation's preferred means to address poverty, homelessness, mental illness, immigration and many other social, economic and medical conditions.
The Obama administration will have closed and privatized more public schools than at any time in US history.
This is already an accomplished fact. Under President Obama, the US Department of Education has extended the authority to certify school systems to private agencies controlled by champions of privatization like the Gates, Walton Family, and Eli Broad Foundations, and allowed the same actors to write its Race To The Top program, which allocates federal education dollars to the school systems that disband, privatize, and hand over their assets to private actors the quickest.
When Obama leaves office, it will be legal and acceptable for US presidents to unilaterally murder with or without announcement of cause anybody, anyplace on the planet within the reach of US drones, special operators and mercenaries.
When Obama assumed office the US was secretly imprisoning and torturing thousands in at least a dozen countries around the world. We are told now that torture and secret jails are used less often now, that the preferred expedient
